Vipers defeat Storm in Atom final preview
andrew brethauer march 20th, 2011

The Chatham Vipers need double overtime to defeat the Mooretown Storm 3-2 to become the Atom division champions of the March Break house league tournament Sunday afternoon at Clearwater arena.

Both teams meet previous the day before, and kept the game close early on, with neither team getting scoring chances as the defence held strong for both sides. Mooretown goalie Braiden Shaw comes up big in the first with a pad save when a 2 on 0 Vipers breakaway came down on him.

Mooretown would pick up the puck and move down the ice, getting three shots on Chatham goalie Justice Durocher, causing a scramble in front but the Storm couldn't pick up the rebounds and put it in, keeping the score 0-0 after the first period.

The Storm in the second would get an early powerplay chance, and they wouldn't let the chance escape, as Joseph Kraayenbrink put a long backhand shot high on Durocher, putting the Storm up 1-0 at the stat of the period.

But just as quickly, the Vipers would respond, as Brenden Hunter would break in on Shaw, deking the goal left, before turning back, catching Shaw sliding and putting the puck into the open net to make it a 1-1 game.

With the Vipers on the powerplay, they would keep the puck in the Mooretown zone. Jacob Cuthburt would take a shot from the point, which would deflect just wide of the net. The Storm would escape the period with the game still tied 1-1.

In the third period, Isaac Doxtator would have an excellent chance in front, but just miss on a one time chance in the slot.

The Vipers would get their own chance, as Hunter keeps the puck in the zone on a clearing attempt and finds Bolan Lucier who wrists a shot blocker side on Shaw, putting the Vipers back in front 2-1.

But it wouldn't take Mooretown long to respond, as Pascal Plante-Hunter would deke through the Viper defence for a breakaway, and put a shot glove side on Durocher with a wrist shot to tie the game back up at 2-2.

The game would need overtime to solve it. In the first overtime, The Storm will fall into penalty trouble late in the period, and Cuthburt would have another long chance to score, but it again would go wide of the net. The first overtime would see back and forth action, as the Storm cleared the puck trying to kill off the penalty.

A second overtime would be needed, and the penalty the Storm took would turn out to be costly, as Cuthburt would deke through the defence, and get into the slot, sending a wrist shot on net that beat Shaw, and handed the Vipers their second victory over Mooretown in two days and also the Atom division championship with a 3-2 overtime victory.
