andrew brethauer march 18th, 2011

The Sarnia Green Machine won their second game of the March Break Tournament, defeating the White Sabers 4-1 in Novice division action.

The Green Machine got things started quickly as Liam Cullinan scored just 41 seconds into the first period.

A minute and a half later Ryan Proulx made it 2-0 for the Green Machine, beating the White Sabers goalie Eli Erickson to give the Green Machine an early lead.

The White Sabers had two chances in front, one on a breakaway and another on the rebound, but Hayden George kept the puck out of the net and held onto his shutout. Christian D'Agostini had a chance to spoil it on a breakaway, but George was able to hold strong.

In the second period the Green Machine had chances but Erickson came up with a big save to keep the score just 2-0. He also managed a huge poke check save to push the puck wide on another breakaway chance.

But the pressure the Green Machine put on Erickson finally paid off, as Carter Barron picked up the puck behind the net and was able to wrap around the post to beat Erickson five hole to put the Green Machine up 3-0 going into the third.

In the third the White Sabers would start on the powerplay, but for the first half of the powerplay they had icing issues. But Brennon Vanderkloet would come in on a breakaway for the White Sabers, but George was able to make the big save. On the scramble in front, the White Sabers couldn't whack the puck home and still looked to break the shutout.

Unfortunately for them, the Green Machine would get another, as a puck thrown on net wouldn't be handled by Erickson and Alex Dafoe would be there to put home the rebound to make it 4-0 for the Green Machine.

But just over a minute later the White Sabers would spoil the shutout, as a Green Machine defence men tried to bring the puck out front of the net, and after a cough up, Noah Porter was able to find the puck and put it passed George to get the White Sabers on the board 4-1.

Despite two scrambles in front and constant pressure at the end of the period, the Green Machine would hold on to the victory and take the game 4-1.
