Nguyen would stand strong in the early moments on the game, keeping his eye on the puck while a scramble ensued in front of his crease. With the period coming to an end, the action stayed in the Pittsburgh zone, but Pittsburgh was able to keep the 1-0 lead.

In the second period, the Red Wings would continue the pressure as Colton Mitchell would steal the puck and feed it over to Stokley, but Nguyen again would be there for the save.

But the Wings pressure would finally pay off, as Kyle Pite would come in on a 3-0 and keep the puck, sending a wrist shot to the short side of Nguyen and tying the game at 1-1.

The Red Wings would still keep it in the Pittsburgh zone and it would pay off as Brett Vince would send a wrist shot from a sharp angle that would beat Nguyen short side again to give the Wings their first lead of the game 2-1.

Clark Dunn would get a second chance for Pittsburgh near the end of the period, but Red Wing goalie Hayden Forte would come up with just enough of the puck to send it wide, as the Red Wings take a 2-1 lead into the third.

Off the opening seconds of the third off the faceoff, Hunter Dunn would pick up the loose puck and send a long wrist shot on net that beat Forte to tie the game at 2-2.

The Red Wings would try to respond but Pittsburgh goalie Kevin Nguyen was able to come up with save after save, stopping Brett Vince alone on a breakaway, as well as Corey Stokley.

With the period coming to a close, each team looked for the go ahead. Clark Dunn would pick up the loose puck in the slot, and rush in. With the seconds ticking away, he deked Forte and put a back hand into the net with 1 second remaining in the game to give Pittsburgh the 3-2 victory.
