The odds
of baseball finally caught up to the Sarnia Braves
as they dropped their first game of the season on
the road to the Wyoming Cowboys 4-3.
The Braves are now 11-1 on the 27-game regular
season, and sit a top the WCBL standings with Port
Lambton (7-3), Chatham (7-3) and Courtright (6-5)
rounding out the top four of the ten team loop.
Wyoming scored early on Braves starter Anthony
Shepherd as they took a 3-0 lead after two innings.
Sarnia battled back in the third as Wade Babula,
Nick Baljeu and James Grant all reached base with
two out in the frame. Babula would come into count
to make the score 3-1.
After Wyoming added one more run in the third,
Sarnia would count a single run in both the fourth
and fifth innings with Jamie Barron and Babula
scoring. Doug Amlin and Mason McCarthy picked up RBI
base knocks respectively.
Babula would come on in relief of Shepherd and throw
five innings of one hit ball to keep Sarnia in the
game. But, 4-3 was as close as the Braves would get
despite putting Chris Bright and then Baljeu in
scoring position in the last two innings of the ball
game.
“Tonight was a tough game for us,” says base coach
Tyler Young. “We were coming off a hard-fought win
the night before and guys were beginning to feel the
pressure of keeping up the winning streak. We can
get back to the business of playing quality baseball
now and start focusing on every play, instead of
keeping an undefeated record alive. After awhile,
the thought of a loss weighs on you and you begin to
wonder how the team will respond. We will be back
out there looking for a win in Corunna.”
The Braves, who earlier in the season defeated the
Cowboys 8-0 at home, will return to Wyoming on July
17th for the rubber match of their three-game
regular season set. The team travels to Corunna on
June 30th before heading off to Dresden on July 3rd.
