The
Sarnia Sturgeon traveled to London on Saturday to
take on the Forest City Thunderbirds at Westminster
High School. In the opener the Bantam Sturgeon (2-2)
took on the first place Thunderbirds.
This was a rematch of a game played two weeks ago at
Norm Perry Park in which the London team scored 14
unanswered points in the fourth quarter to escape
with a 28-23 victory. On their opening possession,
the Sturgeon drove the length of the field for a
touchdown scored by Easton Klaudi on a pass from
Blake Maxfield. The Thunderbirds responded with a
major of their own in their ensuing possession to
knot the game at 6. Sarnia went up 7-6 on a 40 yard
single by Maxfield and their lead increased to 14-6
on a 65 yard punt return by Matteo Tesone and
Maxfield's convert as the first quarter ended.
London scored the only points of the second quarter
on a 30 yard touchdown run. Easton Klaudi blocked
the conversion attempt and the Sturgeon led 14-12 at
the half.
The Thunderbirds came out flying in the second half,
driving for a touchdown the first time they had the
ball. This major was the only scoring of the third
quarter and the home side led 18-14 after three
quarters. The Sturgeon scored a safety with 10
minutes remaining in the game to narrow their
deficit to 18-16. As a result of the safety the
Forest City had to kick off to the Sturgeon and
Sarnia's return brought the ball to mid-field. Four
plays later a 25 yard pass from Maxfield to Tesone
had the Sturgeon up 22-18. The Sturgeon defense held
and forced a punt from the Thunderbirds. The
Sturgeon had the ball at their own 35 yard line with
only 4 minutes remaining and were attempting to run
out the clock . At this point disaster struck for
the visitors. A Sarnia ball carrier was stripped of
the ball and the London defensive player ran 35
yards for the go ahead touchdown. On their final
drive, a fumble on the Forest City 40 ended the
Sturgeon final chance for a comeback as the
Thunderbirds prevailed 24-22.
In the PeeWee contest the second place Thunderbirds
hosted the first place, undefeated Sturgeon. The
Thunderbirds took the opening kick-off and after 3
plays had to punt the ball away to Sarnia. The
Sturgeon then orchestrated an 85 yard drive that
lasted 8 minutes. Joey Ferrera capped this drive
with a 2 yard run and Sarnia was up 6-0. The score
remained this way until London took their first, and
only, lead 7-6, with a touchdown and a convert at
the beginning of the second quarter. From here on
the game was all Sturgeon. Touchdowns on runs of 65
yards by Jamie Campbell and 54 yards by Keyshaun
Jordan had the visitors up 20-7 at the break. On
their first possession of the second half the
Sturgeon lead was increased to 26-7 on another fine
touchdown run by Campbell, this one covering 62
yards. At this point the coaching staff began
substituting freely on defense. Additional touchdown
runs by Campbell of 52 yards and Hunter Taylor of 7
yards, along with a 2 point convert on a pass from
Jackson Fisher to Nick Iacobelli completed the
scoring and resulted in an overwhelming 40-13
victory for the Sturgeon PeeWees.
Next weekend all three Sturgeon teams play at Norm
Perry Park. The PeeWees host the Toronto Jr. Argos
Saturday at noon, the Bantams host the Junior Argos
Sunday at noon and the Junior Varsity host the
powerful Burlington Stampeders Sunday at 2 p.m.
