Tuesday, May 24 VS Wyoming:
The Corunna Midget #2 team coached by Tom Coyle
and Devin Galvin defeated Wyoming with a decisive
18-7 win in their season opener on Tuesday, May 24
in Wyoming.
“Traditionally, Wyoming has a very strong team,”
commented Head Coach Tom Coyle, “and the entire team
was very nervous going into the game.”
In the
first inning Makenna Harrison beat out a perfect
bunt and Emily Williams singled to move her into
scoring position. Harrison scored on Alex Coyle’s
sacrifice to right field, putting Corunna on the
board. Wyoming capitalized on one hit and two errors
to score 3 in their first trip to the plate. Daylin
Galvin led off in the second with a single followed
by Alex Dobson and Maddy Neely each with singles to
right. Jess Vickard drew a walk and Megan Thevenot
and Emily Williams chipped in a single each to score
the maximum 6 runs in the second inning.
The
Corunna squad never looked back, posting 11 runs
over the next 5 innings while holding Wyoming to
just 4 more. Alex Coyle went the distance for
Corunna with 7 strike-outs and only giving up 4
hits. Makenna Harrison led the offence with 3 hits
Megan Thevenot, Emily Williams, Alex Coyle and Maddy
Neely recorded two hits each.
Monday, May 30 VS Alvinston:
The Corunna Midget #2 team posted their second win
in as many games last night against Alvinston. The
Corunna squad defeated Alvinston 19-0 in five
innings. Alex Coyle recorded the win with 6 strike
outs and no hits. Mia Miles pitched the last two
innings and posted 2 K's and gave up one hit.
Leading the offense were Makenna Harrison and Abbi
Dobson who both went 3 for 3 at the plate.
Wed. June 1 VS Highgate
The Corunna Midget #2 team easily defeated Highgate
18-11 on Wednesday, June 1 on the road. The Corunna
squad capitalized on singles from Abbi Dobson and
Alex Coyle and 3 Highgate errors to post 5 runs in
the first inning. Highgate answered with 2 runs in
the second but Corunna rallied for 4 more runs in
the 3rd. With a 9-2 lead, coach Tom Coyle wanted to
give his other pitchers some experience and Highgate
was able to score 6 runs on 2 hits and 7 walks. Alex
Coyle returned to the mound in the 4th and finished
up the game with a total of 9 strike-outs. Megan
Thevenot led the offense with 3 hits followed
closely by Alex Dobson and Alex Coyle with 2 each.
Alex Dobson also drew 3 walks making her on base
percentage perfect for the night.
Monday, June 6 VS Charing Cross
The Corunna Midget #2 girls racked up their forth
consecutive win easily defeating Charing Cross 16-2
in Corunna on Monday night. Strong pitching and
defense by Corunna kept Charing Cross off the
scoreboard for the first 5 innings, while posting 16
runs. Makenna Harrison and Daylin Galvin led the
offense with 2 hits each. Coach Tom Coyle pulled
starting pitcher, Alex Coyle, at the end of two
innings with a 9-0 lead, and rotated through the
rest of the pitching staff to give everyone some
more game experience.
Wednesday, June 8 VS Alvinston:
The Corunna Midget #2 Girls fastball team extended
their winning streak to five with a 16-2 win over
Alvinston on Wednesday, June 8. Corunna exploded for
five runs in each of the first two innings to lead
10-0. Alvinston managed to post 6 runs in the fourth
when coach Tom Coyle switched up the defence and
tried out a couple of new pitchers but Alex Coyle
returned to the mound in the fifth to end the game.
Makenna Harrison led the offense with three hits
with Mia Miles, Maddy Neely and Daylin Galvin adding
two hits each.
Monday, June 13 VS Oil Springs
Oil Springs got off to a good start defensively
shutting Corunna #2 out in the first two innings but
the squad found their bats in the bottom of the
third scoring the maximum 6 runs by capitalizing on
3 hits and 4 Oil Springs errors. Corunna pitcher,
Alex Coyle got into some hot water in the third,
walking the first three batters, but she re-focused
and struck out the next two with bases loaded. She
hit the next batter allowing the Oil Spring’s only
run to score. Corunna posted 6 runs again in the
fourth to end the game in a 12-1 mercy. Coyle went
the distance posting 12 strike-outs and no hits.
Daylin Galvin led the offence with a single in the
third and a powerful hit to deep centre field with
bases loaded in the fourth to score three runs.
Wednesday, June 15 VS Inwood
Corunna #2 Midget Girls fastball team suffered
their first loss of the season in Inwood on
Wednesday, June 2. In preparation for the upcoming
tournament, coach Tom Coyle decided to sit his ace
pitcher and give his bullpen more time on the mound.
Megan Thevenot gave up 2 runs on 2 hits before being
replaced my Emily Williams in the third. Inwood got
hot in the third scoring the max. 6 runs on 5 hits.
The score was tied at 9 after 4 complete innings.
Corunna took back the lead when Alex Dobson scored
on an Emily Williams triple and Megan Thevenot
brought her home with a stand up double. But Inwood
rallied for 3 more runs in the bottom of the fifth
and added one more in the sixth while shutting out
Corunna to post a 13-11 win.
“We
played really sloppy. The whole team lacked
intensity tonight.” Offered assistant coach, Devin
Galvin.
The coaching staff is hoping that this was a good
lesson for the team and will help prepare them for
the competition they will face this weekend in
Cambridge.
June
20 VS Wyoming
Corunna defeated Wyoming 12-11 in an exciting come
back at home on Monday night. Wyoming capitalized on
3 hits, 6 Corunna errors and 3 walks in the first
four innings to post an 11-0 lead. Corunna got on
the board in the bottom of the fourth when Maddy
Neely doubled to bring home Alex Coyle and Daylin
Galvin. Corunna exploded for 6 hits in the fifth to
score the max. 6 runs. Trailing 11-8 in the bottom
of the 7th Makenna Harrison led off with a single to
centre, Daylin Galvin drew a walk and Megan Thevenot
singled to score Harrison. Maddy Neely singled to
right to bring home Galvin and Thevenot and tie the
game. Mia Miles singled to move Neely to third who
scored on a Fielder’s Choice by Emily Williams to
win the game 12-11.
“Even
though we got off to a bad start, I thought this was
one of our best games this year.” Commented coach
Tom Coyle. “It says a lot about the commitment and
character of the girls when they stay focused and
overcome an 11 run deficit!”
Jess
Vickerd, Abbi Dobson and Maddy Neely led the offence
with 3 hits each. Corunna has a much needed break
and will be back In action on June 30th at home
against Oil Springs.
