The
Sarnia Lambton Sports Hall Board of Directors is
please to announce the 2011 Inductee Recipients. The
Induction dinner will be held at the Camlachie
Community Centre on Saturday September 24, 2011.
Following is the list of Awards and Recipients
Amateur
For
outstanding performance as an amateur athlete in
their sport.
2 Recipients
Perry Arnold - Football
Born in Sarnia
From 1970 – 1973 played Defensive Back and
Linebacker for the University of Western Ontario
Mustangs football team.
In 1970 led the Mustangs in interceptions as a
Freshman
In 1973 was named to the OUAA Allstar Team and to
the All Canadian University Football team by the
Canadian Football Coaches Association becoming the
first Sarnian to receive such an honour.
Also in 1973 won the George McGullagh Trophy as the
MVP on the Mustangs.
1974 was drafted by the Ottawa Rough Riders in the
CFL Draft.
Bill Blunt - Fastball
Was born and raised in Warwick Village where he
played his minor ball and hockey in Watford.
Highlights
In 1971 won O.A.S.A. Intermediate B Championship
with the Alvinston Indians
Played for the Camlachie Grain and Feed Fastball
Team 1972 - 1988
Earned MVP (1975), Pitcher of the Year 33 wins – 6
losses (1976), Top pitcher at Zebra Bar Tournament
(1978), O.A.S.A. Intermediate C Championship in
Hearst On (1979 & 1981)
Bud Morrison Award
The Bud Morrison Award recognizes a person who over
a number of years has made significant contributions
to the youth in their sport endeavors. (ie: coach,
manager, official, trainer, facility maintenance,
including school officials)
Denise Kohlmeier – Cross Country/Track &
FieldDenise Kohlmeier has been a teacher-coach for
the past thirty years at St. Patrick’s Catholic
Secondary School (1980-1996) and St. Christopher
(1997 – present)
Denise compiled an outstanding record of coaching
champions and championship teams at the local,
regional, provincial and international levels.
Denise brought her own personal knowledge,
credibility and expertise to the sport having
excelled herself in both high school and at the
Univiersity Level.
Builder
This award recognizes significant contributions
in the establishment of a sport from its infancy to
the mature state within the community; would have
been the individual to keep a sport alive in the
community and have a long-term service on sport
committees and executive positions either at the
local, provincial or national levels.
Ed and Wendy Seguin
Ed and Wendy Seguin – Huron Lakers Girls Basketball
Club
In 1988 Ed and Wendy started the Lakers
organization. In it’s early beginnings the
organization was known as the Irish and consisted of
15 girls from boundaries to allow any girl in
Lambton County to play. The name was changed to
better reflect the participation of the whole
community and together they guided the organization
as it grew to a membership of 350 girls and ran a
club program with 16 travel teams.
Ed has served as a coach at a number of elementary
schools and led the St Pat’s Senior Basketball team
to the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic
Association AAA Championship in 1991, 1994 and 1995.
The truly remarkable characteristics of the Sequins
is not what they have accomplished on the basketball
court buy how they have used basketball as a medium
to teach young girls important aspects of life.
Earl Mackenzie
The Earl
MacKenzie award recognizes those people involved in
sports at least 30 years prior to the year of
induction who are worth of enshrinement.
Larry Capp – Squash, Hockey, Fastball, Bowling,
Golf
Squash career began in 1968.
Competed at the Ontario Masters Provincial
Championship in 2001, 2002 and 2003 earning 1st, 2nd
& 3rd .Competed at the Canadian National Champions
with a 4th place finish.
Competed in tournaments in Toronto (2000 – 2003 with
2 semi finalist and 2 bronze finishes), London
(3rd), Peterborough (1st)
Hockey - Co-Founder Point Edward Old Timers Hockey
Club. Competed at 2000 Ontario Senior Games
Association in Collingwood.
Fastball -Played major league fastball in 1957 -
1958, continued to play two pitch in Sarnia
Won numerous trophies for Golf and Bowling.
Professional
For outstanding performance at the professional
level. Must have achieved professional status and
maintained that level for three (3) years or three
(3) seasons and be retired from his/her professional
career for a minimum of three (3) years.
Pat Verbeek - Hockey
Born May 24, 1964
Hometown - Wyoming, Ontario.
Verbeek was selected 43rd overall by the New Jersey
Devils in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft.
He helped the Devils to their first playoff berth in
the 1987–88 season, when he scored a club record 46
goals during the regular season.After the 1988–89
season, the Devils traded him to the Hartford
Whalers. In his first season, he led the team in
goal scoring and in his second he was named team
MVP. In 1991, he made the All-Star team for the
first time and in the following season, Verbeek was
named the Whalers captain. After a short stint with
the Rangers, he signed with the Dallas Stars as a
free agent, where he won his first Stanley Cup in
1999.During the 1999–2000 season, he signed with the
Detroit Red Wings. In Detroit, he passed the
1,000-point mark, scored his 500th goal, and moved
into the top 25 in career goal scoring before
returning to Dallas for his final NHL season in
2001–02.
Gary
Waite – Squash
Born Sept 9, 1966 in Quebec, moved with his family
to Sarnia and attended Northern.
After having been exposed to squash by his parents
Lewis and Janet at the age of 12, Gary became part
of a burgeoning junior squash movement in the area
inundating courts at Pinsonneault’s and the Sarnia
Riding Club for years to come. Gary garnered more
titles than any other junior squash player in the
history of Canadian squash. He would continue this
trend into the professional ranks to become one of
the most decorated professional squash players in
the history of the game worldwide. In 1993, while
attending Harvard University, Gary could lay claim
to being the #1 hardball singles player, #2 hardball
doubles player and #12 softball singles player in
the World...a feat in combined rankings not achieved
by any player in the history of any of the three
disciplines.
Bud
Haveling Special Achievement Award
This award recognizes a person who over a number
of years has made significant contributions to
sports beyond athletic endeavors, ie: media, coach,
official, trainer etc.
Gerald (Gerry) and Merilyn Benenati
Gerry
and Merilyn Benenati were both involved with local
sports for over 20 years.
Gerry coached Ladies Softball, became a member of
the Sarnia Broomball Referee Association, Sarnia
Umpires Association. He was elected Umpire in Chief
and Assigner for Sarnia/Lambton.
Gerry was involved with several organizations and
committees: Inter-county baseball association for
Southwestern Ontario, Can-Am Tournament, SMAA Umpire
Committee, Sarnia Sting Booster club, Michigan
Umpires Association and in the winter the Florida
Umpire Association.
Merilyn played ladies softball in 1979 and went on
to coach the team along side Gerry. In the early
1980’s she was asked to be the team driver for the
Jr. Pacer Lacrosse Team, she also was on the board
of directos for the Pacers. Merilyn was involved
with the Canadian Senior Lacrosse Championship held
in Sarnia in 1987.
Merilyn also volunteered at the International Gold
bat Tournament, sat on the board for the Can-Am
Tournament, SMAA, Sarnia Sting Booster Club.
Team
This is a group award in recognition for winning
a major championship or a team performing in an
outstanding manner over a period of time.
Camlachie Fastball Team
1981 Ontario Intermediate “C” Champions in Elmvale
The team was formed in 1962 and played for 25 years
at the Camlachie Community Centre ball park.
