The
Sarnia Braves moved their record to 9-0 in WCBL play
with a thrilling 3-2 late inning comeback victory
against the Wyoming Cattlebarons.
Braves hard throwing righthander Rory Fell, 2-0 and
a 2.33 ERA, struck out five as he went the distance
for his second complete game win of the season.
The first two innings went without incident as both
Fell and Wyoming Ace Ryan Nutma had hitters off
balance.
Wyoming was first to count in their half of the
third inning. Chris Pool roped a double to left
field to lead off and Matt McGrail reached on a bunt
single to put runners on the corners. Nick Core
picked up an RBI on a ground ball to short to make
the score 1-0. Justin Grift then connected off Fell
for an RBI double before being thrown out on his way
to third base.
Trailing 2-0, Sarnia would get one back in the
bottom of the inning. With one out, Wade Babula
would shoot a single to the left side and Nick
Baljeu would move him into scoring position with a
sacrifice bunt. James Grant would then line a full
count fastball into right field to make the score
2-1.
Sarnia would make the comeback complete in the fifth
inning as Babula would again single. After a stolen
base and passed ball, Sarnia would tie the game as
Babula would score on a Nick Baljeu grounder to the
right side. Baljeu would reach on an error and steal
second on the next pitch to put the winning run in
scoring position. Grant would come though again,
this time with a triple to the right field wall for
his 26th RBI of the season and a 3-2 Braves lead.
Fell would settle down the rest of the way and
despite a runner reaching second in the Cattlebarons’
last at bats, come out unscathed for the victory.
“I have to give a lot of credit to our players for
coming to the park every night and executing the
little things that win ball games. When you can get
a runner on base, bunt him over and then get that
key hit, this game is fun,” says coach Scott Finnie.
“Rory pitched an incredible game and kept us in it
long enough to get some breaks. That type of grit is
what baseball is all about.”
The Braves play host to the Courtright Cardinals
this week and Wyoming again on June 27th.
