The league leading Sarnia Braves pushed their WCBL
record to 8-0 with a hard fought 4-1 victory over
the second-place Port Lambton Pirates.
Jeff Jones pitched the complete game win by allowing
just six hits and striking out nine. Jones, a former
draft pick of the San Diego Padres, moved his record
to 2-0 on the season with a sparkling 0.33 ERA.
Sarnia, coming off of a win and two postponed games
this week, took a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
Nick Baljeu was hit by a Paul Bezaire curve ball
with one out. James Grant followed the bean ball up
with a double to left-centre field that drove in
Baljeu. With two out in the inning, Mason McCarthy
would drive a ball deep off the wall in left for a
double that would score Grant.
The Braves would add another run in the second
inning as Chris Bright drew a lead off walk and
stole second base. Doug Amlin would ground out to
the right side, allowing Bright to move to third
before he came in to cash on a Greg Kemble
groundout.
The Pirates would hit the board in the fourth inning
with Bezaire roping a long RBI triple into the right
field gap.
The game would remind scoreless from that point
until the seventh inning. Wade Babula would start
things off with a triple for the Braves. He would
come into cash on a Grant sacrifice fly to right
field.
Down 4-1, Port Lambton would make things interesting
as their first to hitters would reach base. With one
out, and runners on first and third, Bright would
make an incredible diving catch in leftfield to see
Sarnia avoid some late game heroics from the home
side.
The Braves play host to Wyoming on Tuesday and
Courtright on Wednesday of this week. Both games are
scheduled for Errol Russell Park at 7:30pm. The team
then travels to Forest on Friday.
