Braves extend streak to seven
james grant june 14th, 2011

The Sarnia Braves extended their perfect opening to the 2011 Western Counties Baseball League season to seven wins in a row by defeating Dresden 5-3.

Joel Ainsworth pitched the complete game for his second victory of the year as he struck out eight, while scattering just eight hits.

Dresden hit the board early to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as three of their first four hitters connected for singles. But, as they have all season long, the Braves battled back quickly and scored three of their own in the first as Nick Baljeu, Rory Fell and Mason McCarthy came into count. McCarthy, Jamie Barron and Scott Finnie would pick up RBIs.

With the score 3-2 in favour of the hometown Braves, Dresden worked their leadoff man aboard in the third only to see him come around to knot the score on a series of passed balls.

But, the Braves settled back into the lead in the fourth as Wade Babula and Baljeu reached base to start the inning. Babula would score on a wild pitch to James Grant and Baljeu would come into count on a Fell hit for the 5-3 lead.

The Braves will now face the Petrolia Raiders in Petrolia on Thursday at 6:30pm before heading to Port Lambton to take on the Pirates, Sunday at 2:00pm. Wednesday’s home game against the Pirates has been moved to August 4th at 7:30pm. Sarnia’s next home games are Tuesday June 21st and Wednesday June 22nd as Wyoming and Corunna come to town. Both games are scheduled for a 7:30pm start.
