Sarnia,
On – Jamie Campbell scored three touchdowns Saturday
afternoon, helping to lead the Sarnia Sturgeon
Peewee football team to a 26-14 victory over the
Forest City Thunderbirds at Norm Perry Park.
With the
Sturgeon down by eight and on the goal line, a
Campbell was able to find the end zone on a counter
play, speeding by the defenders before they could
make the tackle, adding as well two extra points for
the convert to tie the game at 14-14.
Campbell
would add a run up the middle in the fourth to give
the Sturgeon a 20-14 lead, and with the game coming
to a close, Campbell would break down the sideline
and find open field for a 78 yard touchdown run,
leading the Sturgeon to the 26-14 victory and
picking up the player of the game honours.
But the
start of the game was not offensively great for
Sarnia, as fumbles and turnover's cost the Sturgeon
position, as well as kick off returns also stopped
the offence from taking the field, as the special
teams could not recover the ball and multiple
occasions. Though the Sturgeon defence would make a
big stop in the first quarter inside their own 10
yard line, keeping Forest City out of the end zone
and the game scoreless.
Defensive linemen Nick Nolet provided continued
pressure to the quarterback and running backs,
making numerous tackles for loss, as the Sturgeon
defence held the Thunderbirds offence to only 14
points, despite being in their own end of the field
for most of the game.
Joesph
Ferrera would start the scoring for the Sturgeon
with a goal line push, running through the middle
and just into the end zone to make it 6-0. Forest
City would respond two players later, as quarterback
Ethan Martin would fake a pass, and take off through
the Sturgeon defence for a 48 yard touchdown run.
The extra point was good to put Forest City up 7-6.
The
Sturgeon could not move the ball after the
touchdown, and were moved back to penalties and
tackles in the backfield.
To start
the second half the Thunderbirds continued to use
the big run, picking up a 33 yard touchdown run
after recovering an onside kick to put them ahead
14-6, before Campbell helped the Sturgeon come back.
Sarnia
also found their game on the ground, as running
backs Keyshaun Jordan and Cameron Shaw each picked
up over 25 yard runs to move the chains.
The
peewee Sturgeon are now 3-0 to start the season
after defeating Orangeville twice over the last two
weekends.
