Courtright, ON - The Sarnia Braves moved their WCBL
record to 6-0 with their third extra-innings victory
of the week as they toppled the Corunna Giants 7-4
in Courtright.
Rory Fell, returning from injury, made his first
start of the season. He went the complete game,
scattering nine hits and striking out nine over
eight innings.
“It was great to see Rory in such fine form
tonight,” says coach Brad Wright. “Our pitching
staff has really found its groove as of late, but
Rory has always been one of our planned keys to
success. To see him throw such a strong game in his
first live outing is incredible.”
Starter Joel Ainsworth had to bow out of the contest
shortly before game time, which saw Fell quickly
moved up from his scheduled Saturday outing. The
less than favourable circumstances saw a rough start
for the righty as Corunna notched two runs in the
first inning. But, Fell was able to settle down and
hold the Giants off the board for the next five
innings.
This allowed his teammates to claw themselves back
into the game against veteran left hander Mike
Tyndall in the sixth inning. James Grant would walk,
Russ Muhlig would single, and Chris Bright would be
hit by a pitch to load the bases. Fell and Greb
Kemble singles would drive in Grant and Bright to
tie the game at 2-2.
Sarnia would nudge ahead in the seventh as Nick
Baljeu would score on a Muhlig hit. Corunna would
battle right back in the bottom of the inning as
Dwayne Amyotte came into count.
In the eighth, Sarnia finally solved Tyndall, by
scoring four runs as Bright, Randy Thingstad, Baljeu
and Wade Babula would all count. Babula put the
Braves ahead with a long double to left field with
two out in the inning. Fell would close out the game
in the bottom of the eighth for his first victory of
the year.
Sarnia hosts Dresden on Monday and Port Lambton on
Wednesday at Errol Russell Park in Sarnia. Both
games start at 7:30pm.
