Braves take home opener with shutout
james grant june 6th, 2011

Sarnia, ON - The Sarnia Braves moved to 4-0 in Western Counties Baseball League action with an 8-0 victory over the Wyoming Cowboys at Blackwell Park.

The game marked a successful home opener for the Braves who on Saturday drew the Burlington Brants in the opening round of the Ontario AAA Finals.

Starter Mike Hyde moved his record to 3-0 on the season and kept his ERA at zero with a three-hit, nine strikeout complete-game performance.

The Braves got things started early as Nick Baljeu and Chris Bright each singled off of Wyoming starter Tim Boersma. Centerfielder James Grant then knocked a double deep into the leftfield gap to score both base runners for a 2-0 lead. Mason McCarthy would plate Grant as Sarnia took the early 3-0 advantage.

The game would stay scoreless throughout the next four innings. Wyoming would manage two hits in the fourth and one hit in the fifth inning but a runner on third would be as close as the Cowboys would come to scoring.

Sarnia would only connect for one hit, another Grant double, before breaking the game open in the bottom of the sixth.

Rory Fell and Russ Muhlig would each reach base to start the sixth inning. Catcher Greg Kemble would connect for an RBI single with one out to add some breathing room. An error on a hard hit groundball by Scott Finnie and an RBI bunt single by Jamie Barron would plate two more runs. With the bases still loaded, Baljeu would rip a liner to center field which would score Kemble and Finnie for the 7-0 lead. Barron would count on a Grant ground ball to third to wrap up the scoring.

The Braves have four games remaining this week as they take on the Chatham Brewers and Corunna Giants before travelling over the weekend to face the Kincardine Cubs and London Dodgers.
