The Sarnia Fury Black (U9) recently competed in the
Strathroy Middlesex United Soccer tournament. The
team was placed in the Red U9 Division and was
participating in their first tournament as a team.
Their first opponents were a strong (London)
Oakridge Dynamite team. The Fury began the game on a
quick pace scoring the first goal on a nice
breakaway by Carter Barron. The Dynamite countered
tying the game from a converted corner kick. Two
hand balls were called in the penalty area against
Sarnia giving Oakridge great opportunities to take
the lead. The first penalty kick rang off the
crossbar, however luck wasn't on the Fury side as
the second was converted on a strong blast. Although
the Fury played very well, the Oakridge team was too
strong closing out the game with a 5 - 1 victory.
In the second game of the tournament the Fury faced
Sarnia rival's Bluewater Boom. It was their first
meeting of the season as both Lambton Kent teams did
not meet each other prior in District action. The
Boom started strong as mid-fielder Jonathan DaSilva
converted on a long distance shot which eluded Fury
keeper Andrew Harron. Not flustered, the Sarnia Fury
mounted great pressure and were awarded on a goal by
left mid-fielder Dominic Krasinkiewicz. Shortly
after Carter Barron got behind the Boom's defence
and converted the Fury's second goal of the game.
They went into the half up 2 - 1.
The Fury continued a strong pace in the second half,
attacking often in the offensive zone. Fury striker
Mateo Troiani put the Fury up by two goals on a
strong drive inside the Boom's penalty area. Ryan
Janssens would close out the scoring sending the
Sarnia Fury Black to their first win of the
tournament. Final Score: Sarnia Fury Black 4 -
BlueWater Boom 2 .
On Sunday morning the Fury met the Lambeth Lancers
in a must win situation. A big win would put Sarnia
into the finals. The boys came to play dominating
the Lancers from the start. Strong performances by
all kids as the Fury played their best game of the
season. Goals were scored by Ryan Janssens, Carter
Barron, Dominic Krasinkiewicz, Kyle Flamminio and an
own goal by a Lancer defender. The Fury won 5 - 0
with keeper Andrew Harron picking-up the shutout.
With the win, the Sarnia Fury advanced to the finals
in a re-match with the Oakridge Dynamite. This time
the boys were determined to succeed having gained
great confidence as the tournament progressed. The
Fury struck first as they were awarded a penalty
kick from a called hand ball. Fury striker Isaiah
Edlington stepped up to take the penalty kick and
did not disappoint, firing a blast into the left
side of the Dynamite goal. Sarnia took a two goal
lead when striker Ryan Janssens was awarded a free
kick. From about 20 yards out, Ryan sent a
thunderous shot on goal which found the corner of
the net giving Sarnia a two goal lead. Oakridge
would get one back scoring late in the first half.
The second half presented exiting action of both
sides of the pitch. The Dynamite capitalized on a
tired Fury line tying the game. In the later stages
of the half, Fury defender Dean Palimaka was knocked
down by an aggressive Dynamite forward and Oakridge
would score on a depleted defence. Fury would
counter and eventually tie the game on a beautiful
free kick taken by defender Christian D'Agostini.
Oakridge would come through however, scoring in the
dying seconds of the game on a goal mouth scramble.
The goal gave Oakridge the title but the Fury made
them earn it. All coaches and parents were very
proud of all the kids performances. This was a
stepping stone for good things to come and a great
learning experience.
