The
St.Christopher Cyclones are the new OFSAA Boys’ ‘AA’
soccer champions after defeating Our Lady of Lourdes
of Guelph 1-0 Saturday afternoon at Windsor Stadium.
The Cyclones tasted gold after winning seven
straight games scoring 16 goals and allowing only 1.
The Cyclones opened the tournament beating Thomas L.
Kennedy 4-0 and Mark Spinozzi set the tone scoring
his first of two goals only 10 seconds into the
game. Dillon Grondin and Alex DeCarolis would also
score for St.Christopher while Chris Kerwin recorded
the shutout, his first of six on the weekend. In
game 2 on Thursday, Thomas Moxley fired home a 25
yard strike at the end of the first half for the
only goal in a 1-0 win over Our Lady of Lourdes.
Needing only a win in their next two games to
advance to the quarter finals, the Cyclones again
came on strong Friday morning beating St. Mary’s
College 3-0. Knowing a win in their last round robin
game would win the division, the Cyclones overcame a
1-0 deficit to beat St. Francis Xavier 2-1 as Corey
Jackson and Alex DeCarolis found the back of the
net. This set the stage for the quarter-finals as
St.Christopher faced Picton’s Prince Edward, a team
that won 3 of 4 games in the round robin. In a game
that could have been more lopsided than it was,
DeCarolis scored twice and Rodney Reese the other
for a 3-0 victory.
The semi-final opposition would be St. Thomas
Aquinas from Oakville and the Cyclones would get all
their scoring from Corey Jackson and a break-away
save by keeper Chris Kerwin in a 2-0 win, setting up
a rematch with Our Lady of Lourdes who won their
semi-final in penalty kicks over host Kennedy
Collegiate. With the first half scoreless and the
Cyclones holding the edge in play, St.Christopher
came out firing in the second half. 10 minutes in,
Alex DeCarolis drilled home a low shot off a pass
from Danielo Bucci to put the second seeded team up
by a goal. The Crusaders would not quit and with 5
minutes left Cyclones keeper Chris Kerwin tipped a
25 yard blast over the net and that would be as
close as the opposition would come to tying the
affair.
The 2011 Cyclones Senior Soccer team lost only one
game all year including tournaments, league play,
SWOSSAA and OFSAA.
This is the first time any boys’ team from
St.Christopher has won a gold medal at OFSAA. Team
members are Alex DeCarolis (co-captain), Ryan
Greenwood (co-captain), Austin Spearman, Luke
Garrett, Chris Kerwin, Corey Jackson, Mark Spinozzi,
Mike Fazzalari, Anthony Petrucci, Oren Bell, Matt
Stewart, Christian Savo, Pietro Restivo, Rodney
Reese, Mike Rocca, Pat Brennan, Danielo Bucci,
Dillon Grondin and Thomas Moxley. The team is
coached by Richard Prudom, Angelo DiMuzio and Vince
Flamia.
