Imperials let home opener slip
andrew brethauer june 4th, 2011

Sarnia, ON - The Sarnia Imperials held their home opener Saturday night against the Toronto Raiders, but despite holding a 15-0 lead on the Raiders at one point in the 2nd quarter, the Imperials would drop the game in front of the home town crowd 31-29.

The game was scoreless after the first quarter, but in the second quarter, after a pass interference call, Sarnia would punch it in on the ground at the goal line to take a 7-0 lead. The Imperials defence would get in on the scoring, dropping the Raiders quarterback in the end zone for a safety and a 9-0 lead.

The Imperial offence would come back out on the next drive and move the ball quickly down the field. A long pass from the Imperial quarterback would put Sarnia deep in the Toronto red zone, where the Sarnia running back would punch it in for another score, giving Sarnia a 15-0 lead after the extra point was missed.

On the next play, the Raiders would get points back on the board, as a 55 yard run down the side lines would cut the lead to 8. But the Imperials came back quickly, as a 20 yard TD pass would restore the two score game. But just as quickly, the Raiders would throw three quick passes as the half came to a close and score to make it a 22-15 game.

In the second half the Raiders would tie the game at 22-22. Both teams would score single touchdowns in the remaining half of play, but it would be the Raiders field goal that would hand them the game and the victory.

Sarnia now moves to 0-2 on the season. They will take on Sault Saint Marie (1-0) next Saturday, June 11 at 7:00pm.
