Pacers held scoreless in later periods

Sarnia, ON - The Sarnia Pacers looked evenly matched against the St. Catharine's Spartans Saturday evening, but were put back into the losing column after the Spartans held the Pacers scoreless after the first period, on route to a 11-3 final in Jr. B Lacrosse.

Sarnia got the game started with a Kevin Conroy shorthanded goal just 1:01 into the first period. But with the powerplay still in effect, the Spartans would knot the game up as Kyle Potter made it 1-1. Justin Matthews played a strong first period, stopping shot after shot for the Pacers and keeping the score even. But eventually the shot total would get to be to much, and Spartan Tyler Strassburg would make it a 2-1 game.

Minutes later, Conroy would tie things back up for the Pacers, and would eventually give them the lead with his third of the period, a behind the back shot, that gave the Pacers the go ahead. But it would be short lived, as Trevor Hines would tie it back up with his goal, as the Spartans and Pacers were even after the first period.

In the third, things looked to be even on the score sheet, as neither team could get any goals passes the keepers. But as the shot total continued to climb for the Spartans, they would eventually find holes in the Wall in front of the Pacers net. Michael Sharp put the Spartans up with his mid-period goal, followed seconds later by Jim Sheehan and Charlie Sheehan to make it 6-3. Strassburg would cap off the period with a powerplay goal, as the Spartans score four times, and held the Pacers to no goals and take a 7-3 lead.

The Third would echo the second, as neither team could find a goal in the first nine minutes of play until Charlie Sheehan scored to make it an 8-1 game. Strassburg would complete his hat-trick, while Branden Handley and Kyle Winterbottom each scored shorthanded goals in the period, giving the Spartans an 11-3 lead and eventual victory.

Matthews stopped 38 of the 49 shots he faced in the game, while the Pacers managed 39 shots on net. With the loss, Sarnia now sits tied for 3rd with London with 4-10-0 records.

The Pacers finish up their five game home stand on Sunday, June 5th against Windsor at 7:00pm.
