Alvinston, ON - The Alvinston Indians finally
resumed their schedule in the St. Thomas & District
Major Fastball League on Thursday evening in
Alvinston. Alvinston has had 4-5 rainouts on the
season, much like many other teams in the league.
They last played more then a week ago in Fingal
against Shedden, and Shedden returned to Alvinston
tonight to face the Indians.
Shedden came out firing first, as they were able to
score two runs in the top of the second inning.
However, Alvinston got things close in their half of
the second inning, when after a Chris Sheppard
single, and a Tom Jobson sacrifice bunt, Eric
Hyatt's sharp RBI single plated Sheppard. The game
remained 2-1, all the way until the bottom of the
seventh, when Alvinston struck some magic. Brad
Young singled, advanced to second, and then scored
on an RBI single by Chris Sheppard, to knot the game
at 2's, and send the affair to extra innings.
With the international tie-breaker rule in effect,
Shedden was able to score a run, to take a 3-2 lead,
and putting the pressure all on Alvinston, going
into the bottom of the eighth inning. With Sheppard
at second for Alvinston, Jobson was able to advance
him to third, and Sheppard scored on an RBI
fielder's choice by Doug Charlton to tie the game.
With Charlton now at second, pinch-runner Patrick
Saunders was inserted into the game. Eric Hyatt
promptly singled, putting runners at first and
third. Jamie Shields then hit into a fielder's
choice, as Saunders was thrown out at home for the
inning's second out. Andy Triest then reached base
via an infield single to load the bases, and that
set the scene for Chris Drew, who hit a two out
walkoff single to score Hyatt for the game's winning
run.
Alvinston escaped Thursday night's game with a 4-3
win, after leaving 11 runners on base through 7
innings! Chris Sheppard and Andy Triest were both
3/4 for the Indians, and Triest had three stolen
bases in the game. Eric Hyatt also had two hits for
Alvinston in the win. Kyle Crawford got the win for
Alvinston, in relief of Brad Young. The Indians now
have a 5-1 record on the season, and head to the
Snapper Shootout this weekend in Niagara.
