The
Sarnia Braves extended their current win streak to
three games, and overall league record to 14-1, with
an 8-1 victory over the Forest Dragons.
Jeff Jones improved his record to 4-0 on the season
with five innings of shutout baseball. He allowed
only two hits and struck out five. Nick Baljeu came
on in relief and picked up the save, striking out
the final two hitters of the game.
The Braves got on the scoreboard early with three
runs in the first inning. Wade Babula led things off
with a walk and James Grant worked a walk with one
out to put two men aboard. Cleanup hitter Mason
McCarthy then launched a three run homer to left
field.
The score would stay 3-0 Braves until the fifth
inning when the home side would add some insurance.
Grant and McCarthy would each single with two outs
in the inning before rick Taylor would hit a two-run
double to left field. Taylor would then come into
count on an Anthony Shepherd single.
Mark Daley would score for Forest in the sixth but
that is as close as the Dragons would come.
Sarnia would add two runs in their half of the sixth
with Chris Meredith and Babula each scoring. Grant
and McCarthy would pick up the RBI.
“Whenever we get Jeff on the mound the hitters seem
to respond at the plate,” says coach Scott Finnie.
“He brings a lot of confidence to the table and it
transcends throughout the team. It also helps when
Mason is seeing the ball as well as he is. Having a
cleanup hitter that can not only hit for power, but
also for average, does quite a bit for the offence.
Hopefully we can keep it up for our tournament this
weekend.”
The Braves travel to Petrolia before getting two
needed days off before heading to Courtright for day
two of the Thames Valley Crossover Tournament.
Sarnia has a 2-0 record and will face Mitchell to
open this up this Saturday at 10:00am.
