The Alvinston Indians
played at home in front of a strong crowd on what
was a muggy Thursday evening, for a double-header
against the Shedden Mission in game 1, and the St.
Thomas Storm in game 2. First up was the Shedden
Mission, and after falling behind 1-0 early to
Shedden, an Andy Triest single got things going in
the bottom of the third. Brad Young then doubled
putting runners on second and third, and a clutch
Chris Drew double scored both Triest and Young, for
a 2-1 Alvinston lead. Alvinston would then not look
back as they added 6 more unanswered runs, en route
to a 8-1 six inning mercy victory. Scoring the other
Alvinston runs were Jeff Lyons (2), Joe Triest,
Young, Drew, and Aaron Stocking. Driving in the
other Alvinston runs were Drew (with 3 more and a
total of 5 RBI's in the first game), Stocking, J.
Triest, and Jamie Shields. Brad Young was very
effective on the mound, keeping the Shedden hitters
off balanced, and mostly off the scoresheet. Young
earned the win for the Indians, tossing 6 innings,
allowing 1 earned run on 2 hits, with 2 walks, and 7
strikeouts. The final score was 8-1 for Alvinston
vs. Shedden.
In game #2, Alvinston sent young hurler Kyle
Crawford to the mound, and he did not disappoint,
throwing a strong game versus St. Thomas. On the
other side on the mound was Ryan Cummings, who also
threw very well. Cummings allowed an unearned run in
the first inning to Alvinston, when Shields reached
second base on an error, and Chris Drew smacked a
double to score Shields, but Cummings did not allow
a hit the rest of the way for St. Thomas, allowing
only the one hit on the evening, in what was a
masterful outing, as he fanned 12 Alvinston
swingers. St. Thomas scored to tie the game in the
second inning, when they had a runner score because
of a pass ball. St. Thomas then added the winning
run in the fifth inning, when Gould doubled home
Jamie Peat for the winning run. Final score was St.
Thomas 2 and Alvinston 1. Crawford suffered the loss
for Alvinston, pitching seven innings. He walked 8
St. Thomas hitters, but allowed only the 2 hits and
1 earned run, with 9 strikeouts in the game.
Alvinston fell by the final score of 2-1 to St.
Thomas.
The standings are tight heading down to the wire in
the St. Thomas & District Major Fastball League. St.
Thomas holds down first place with a 19-4 record,
while Alvinston is second with a record of 18-5, and
Shedden is third with a record of 17-5. Alvinston
has one game remaining on the schedule, and it is
Tuesday night in Inwood versus Morpeth, beginning at
8pm.
