Dreams of an undefeated season and a provincial
championship ended for the Sarnia Sturgeon PeeWees
at St.Michael's College in Toronto on Sunday as the
Sturgeon fell to the Forest City Thunderbirds 27-6.
The Sturgeon entered the game with an unblemished
8-0 record.
Forest City took the opening kick-off and marched
the ball down the field on a five minute drive to
open the scoring and take a 7-0 lead. The potent
Sturgeon offense was unable to move the ball
consistently due the dominant play of the
Thunderbird defensive line who spent the game in the
Sturgeon backfield.
The
Thunderbirds increased their lead to 14-0 at the
3:15 mark of the second quarter. Sarnia finally
moved the ball well on their last possession of the
half. Time expired as Nicholas Iacobelli was tackled
on the Thunderbird one yard line.
The Sturgeon took the opening kick-off of the second
half and moved the ball down the field for their
first score of the game. Joey Ferrera ran the ball
into the end zone from one yard out. Those were the
only points the Sturgeon offense would muster on the
day as Forest City scored 2 more touchdowns to claim
the provincial championship.
Dylan Fais, Aden Alkinani and Michael Petrucci were
standouts on defense for Sarnia, Keyshaun Jordan
completed 5 of 9 passes for 113 yards and scampered
for another 33 yards on 5 carries. Jamie Campbell
ran 15 times for 42 yards and Joey Ferrera carried
the ball on 12 occasions for 36 yards.
