The Alvinston Indians traveled to Morpeth, for a
double header against the Morpeth Magic on Friday
evening. The Indians are in the thick of the race
for the St. Thomas & District Major Fastball league
Championship, so two wins would be vital to their
chances.
In game #1, the Indians piled on runs early and
often as they cruised to a 15-1, 5-inning mercy.
Alvinston scored 5 in the first inning, 3 in the
third, 4 in the fourth, and 3 in the fifth, while
young twirler Jeff Lyons for Alvinston allowed only
two hits and 1 earned run in his 5 inning outing,
recording the win for the Indians. Ryan Chapman was
4/4 for Alvinston, as he hit for the cycle, with a
single, double, triple, and homerun, three runs
scored, and 2 RBI's. Aaron Stocking and Jeff Lyons
were both 3/3 with a walk for Alvinston. Chris Drew
and Jeff Ingram each went 3/4 in the contest,
including a homerun for Ingram. Andy Triest and Joe
Triest also had multi-hit games for the Indians
going 2/3 and 2/5 respectively.
In game #2, Alvinston got straight to work again
early, as Joe Triest doubled and then scored on a
Jamie Shields batted ball which was misplayed by
Morpeth. Shields who reached base via the error,
then scored on an RBI triple by Chris Drew, for an
early 2-0 lead. In the third, Morpeth was able to
make the score close, when Darcy Vink crossed home
plate on a pass ball, making the score 2-1. However,
in the fifth inning, Lyons singled to start things
off for Alvinston, A. Triest advanced Lyons to
second, J. Triest hit a double, and then Shields
scored both Lyons and J. Triest on a key 2 RBI
single, making it 4-1. Then with two out, Ingram
singled home Shields, to add an all important extra
run again, for a 5-1 lead. Morpeth's Darcy Vink then
belted a triple and was able to score on an infield
groundout making it 5-2, but Chris Sheppard
responded in the Alvinston portion of the sixth
inning, when he hit an inside the park homerun,
making it a 6-2 lead, and sealing the win for
Alvinston. John Ferguson started on the mound for
Alvinston, and was effective in 4 innings of work,
to earn the win. Ferguson allowed 2 runs and 1
earned run, on 2 hits, while striking out 4 and
walking 1. Doug Charlton came in in relief of
Ferguson, tossing 3 innings of shutout ball, on 2
hits, and 2 strikeouts.
The Indians now sport a record of 17 wins and 4
losses, through 21 of 24 games of their schedule.
They have 3 games remaining on their schedule,
including two of the games being played next
Thursday night, against both Shedden and St. Thomas,
during a double header, beginning at 7:30pm.
