Sturgeon score nine touchdowns on route to victory over Toronto
andrew brethauer july 3rd, 2011

Sarnia, ON - It wasn't just the day that was hot at Norm Perry Park on Sunday afternoon, as the Sarnia Sturgeon Bantam offence and defence combined for nine touchdowns in a 66-0 victory over the visiting Toronto Jr. Argo's.

The Sturgeon got things started quickly off their opening drive, as Blake Maxfield ran for a long pick up, followed by Yenel Olivero picking up 30 yards of his own. Maxfield would cap the drive off with a bootleg to the right, and with open field and a few blocks, find his way into the endzone for the first touchdown of the game.

The Argo's would come out on their first drive and connect on a long passing player to keep the drive alive, but facing a strong Sturgeon defence, the Argo's quickly found themselves in a 4th and 3 situation, with Nick Paquette coming in for the big sack on the quarterback to cause a turn over on downs and give Sarnia excellent field position. It wouldn't take Sarnia long to capitalize on the position, as Olivero would rumble down field for 48 yards and another Sturgeon score to put them up 14-0.

Toronto would try again to get something going through the air, but the Sturgeon defence had them covered as well, as Paquette would come up with the interception to once again give Sarnia excellent field position by picking up 40 yards on the return. Olivero would come in to score his second touchdown of the game to put Sarnia ip 20-0 after a missed extra point.

In the second quarter, the duo of Paquette and Olivero would team up again, as Paquette would bust through the Argo's line, fending off numerous tackler's for a large gain, with Olivero again coming in on the next play to pick up a 35 yard touchdown run up the sideline, before cutting back into the middle for the score.

On the next Argo position, the Sturgeon defence would again cause another turnover, as a fumble would be picked up by Matteo Tesone, giving Sarnia the ball again. This time Paquette would take it on his own, rushing 64 yards for another touchdown, the fifth of the half. Sarnia would add an field goal as half time hit, leading Toronto 37-0.

In the second half it would continue to be Sarnia's game. On the Argo's second play of the opening drive, Tesone would pick off the Toronto quarterback and rush the ball back 40 yards for another Sturgeon touchdown. Things would continue to go wrong for the Argo's as on their next drive, another fumble off the snap would be picked up by Joshua Snow, and ran down to the Toronto 5 yard line. Greg Richards brought in at running back would bust in up the middle for the score, giving 50-0 lead.

After the Argo's concede a safety, the Sturgeon would take over again. Richards would again bust up the middle, this time for a 65 yard touchdown run, to put Sarnia up 59-0.

With the game coming to an end, the Sarnia defence would strike one more time, as the Toronto quarterback tried a screen pass that would be picked off by Snow, and ran back for a touchdown to make it a 66-0 final.

Olivero was named player of the game for the Sturgeon, while the Sturgeon defence was responsible for two touchdowns and big pick ups on turnovers, helping the Sturgeon to keep the Toronto offence off the field.

The Bantam Sturgeon now move to 3-3 on the season, and next take on the 4-2 Burlington Stampeders on July 10th at noon, again at Nom Perry Park.
