The Sarnia Boys Soccer Club hosted its first ever
Mini Soccer Tournament. "The Water's Edge Classic"
took place at the beautiful Bluewater Bridge Park on
Saturday July 16th. This one day event featured two
divisions (U9 & U10) and had all local teams
participate. The day was ideal for soccer with the
hot, sunny weather breaking up occassionally with
the cool breeze from the water. Competition began
early with the first game being played at 8:00 a.m.
Divisions would alternate on the hour with all teams
being guranteed 3 games. Some teams would have to
play 4 games enroute to the finals.
The day
provided great competition, good food and fun times
for all spectators. Some great games were played out
with one of the most exciting between Sarnia Fury U9
and the Bluewater Boom in the semi-finals. This game
was tied 2 - 2 at the end of regulation and needed
penalty kicks to determine a winner. Several kicks
were taken with Bluewater Boom winning eventually
with a 6 - 5 advantage. The Boom would advance to
the finals vs. the Sarnia Fury Black. The U9 Black
Fury advanced automatically to the finals by winning
their first two games. The team had not allowed a
goal for the entire tournament. The finals were
exciting and lived up to expectation. Black Fury
came out strong and struck early with mid-fielder
James Brown connecting with a powerful strike from
the right side. The one goal lead would carry into
the half with both teams tired from the heat. The
second half opened with a fast pace as the Boom
seeked the equalizer. Fury forward Kyle Flamminio
made it a two goal advantage as he drove in a
rebound from a sprawling Bluewater keeper. Fury hung
on to win the gold in their Club's inaugural tourney.
