Braves win 17th of the season
James Grant july 18th, 2011

Wyoming, On – The Sarnia Braves finished off a three-game week by defeating the Wyoming Cowboys 4-3 at Canton Park in Wyoming on Sunday night.

The win gives Sarnia the season-series victory over the Cowboys who are headed to the Ontario ‘AAA’ Junior Eliminations in two weeks time.

Braves right-hander Jeff Jones moved his season record to 4-0 while sporting a 0.42 ERA. He struck out seven and allowed just 4 hits in the complete game performance.

Wyoming took the lead in the first inning with Kent McPhail scoring from third base on a Scott Fowler groundout.

Sarnia fought their way back in the third inning. Wade Babula reached base on error and Nick Baljeu followed that up with a walk. James Grant would drop down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third base. Wyoming would choose to walk clean-up hitter Mason McCarthy to load the bases. Catcher Scott Smith would knock a two-run down to left and Rick Taylor would follow with an RBI-single to center for the 3-1 Braves lead.

Baljeu would come around in the fifth to give Sarnia an important insurance run. He would start the inning with a double, move to third on a Grant ground ball to the right side and score on a McCarthy single.

Wyoming would score two unearned runs in their last at bats but Sarnia would hold on for their 17th win of the year in WCBL action. The Braves are 17-2 in league play, 24-3 overall.

Sarnia hosts Petrolia on Wednesday at Errol Russell Park. Game time is 7:30pm. The team is off to Niagara Falls this weekend in preparation for the Ontario ‘AAA’ Senior Eliminations in Windsor on the Civic Holiday Weekend.
