Braves get back to winning
James Grant july 2nd, 2011

The Sarnia Braves defeated the Corunna Giants 7-5 on the road at Duggan Field to move to 12-1 on the year in WCBL action.

The Braves got off to a slow start as Dwayne Amyotte scored for the Giants in the first inning, and went on to add three runs in the second off of Sarnia starter Joel Ainsworth.

The Braves cut the Corunna lead to 4-1 in the third frame as Nick Baljeu and Keegan Brandon would lead things off reaching base. Rick Taylor would drive in Baljeu with a deep shot to left field for a double.
Corunna would answer with a run of their own in the bottom of the third to make the score 5-1. But, the Braves kept up the pressure and it would pay off in the top of the fourth.

“This team has a ton of heart”, stated coach Scott Finnie. “You can’t convince any of these guys that we are out of a game, regardless of how bad a situation may seem.”

Baljeu would get things started with a double to right-center field. Brandon would then smack an RBI single to left. James Grant would then walk to put runners on first and second. Taylor would again drive a deep ball to left field, picking up another double while knocking in Brandon and Grant. The game would head to the sixth inning with the score 5-4.

With one out in the sixth, Grant would reach base for the Braves and advance to second on a passed ball. Doug Amlin would then step to the plate and line his third single of the game into centerfield. Grant would be safe on the play at the plate and the Braves would tie the game 5-5.

It would come down to the last inning of play to decide a winner and with one out, Lance Hart would single to left for Sarnia. Tyler Young would then be hit by a pitch to put two runners on. With two outs Brandon would hit a fly into the left-centre gap that would plate both runners for the 7-5 lead.

Ainsworth, who finished with nine strikeouts and the complete game victory, would close the door in the bottom of the inning.

Sarnia travels to Dresden on Sunday, before hosting Forest at Errol Russell on Tuesday at 7:30pm and heading on the road to Petrolia on Wednesday.
