The
Northern Senior Boys basketball team competed in the
40th Annual Silver Fox tournament this past weekend
in Hamilton finishing with a 3-1 record and winning
the Sir Wilfred Laurier Divisional Championship.
The Silver Fox attracts some of the finest senior
boys basketball teams fromm across the province and
Canada and this year was no different.
Northern defeated South Delta British Columbia,
which features Dan Triano the son of Raptors head
coach Jay Triano who was in attendance for the
tournament. Northern escaped with a one point win
after trailing by 2 with 10 seconds left when Jon
Ravenhorst hit a 3 to put the Vikings ahead for
good.
In the next game, the Vikings defeated a talented
Ottawa Hillcrest team again by a point off the
wining shot of Hayden Auterhoff in the dying seconds
of the game.
In the divisional final, Northern went to overtime
with the #1 ranked team in Kitchener Waterloo -
Bluevale. The game was tied in the last 20 seconds
until Carter Winberg made a tough shot in the paint
to put the Vikings ahead by 2. Jon Ravenhorst iced
the game with 2 clutch free throws to go up by 4.
Which turned out to be crucial as the point guard
from Bluevale who plays on the junior national team
hit a 3 at the buzzer to cut it to a 1 point margin
of victory for the Vikings.
The only game the Vikings dropped was to Father John
Dennison which boasts another junior national player
in Kevin Pangos who is headed to Gonzaga University
(Division 1) on a full basketball scholarship in the
fall.
