andrew brethauer January 11th, 2011

The Northern Vikings have leap the St. Clair Colts in senior girls basketball with a 2-1 win over the Colts on Tuesday afternoon.

It was a rough start for the Colts in the first set, as miscommunication plagued their first match, causing numerous points to go the Vikings ways. Julie McQueen got the game going for the Vikings with two aces, followed by big play at the net by the Colts. Sarah Maxfield would have two blocks at the net for a single point to put the Vikings up 9-5. The Vikings would hold onto a five point lead, as the Colts misses on the ball gives them the lead. Nearing the end of the first set, a long rally would get the colts within four, but after more miscommunication, they would begin to slip, as they miss key shots late to hand the Vikings a 25-17 first set victory.

The second set started well for the Colts as Riley Williams hit an ace to open things up. But the Vikings would take the lead of a block by Delaney Large and Colt long hits to go up 7-3. Juline McQueen would assist with an ace and a kill to help push the early lead. But the Colts comeback, as they start with a block at the net, and Riley Williams with an ace. Jordan Tamming would get a block at the net to tie things at 10-10. But three miss hits, including one into the ceiling would give the Vikings the lead back, 13-10. The Vikings would get back five straight points, and get a kill from Delaney Large for a 16-10 lead. The miscommunication came back again, helping the Vikings push towards the end of the set. The Colts would battle back and get to within two at 22-20, taking advantage of long Viking hits to get closer. Brittany Lewis would tie the game for St. Clair with a kill, and the game would go to 24-24. But the next Colt serve would go into the roof and the Vikings would kill for a 26-24 victory in the second set.

In the third set, it would be the Vikings starting with the ace from Jessica Beaucage, but the Colts would keep it close and hold a one point lead for most of the first half of the set. Jordyn Larsh would take over serving for St. Clair and three aces to get a Colt lead to 10-5. That lead would continue to be pushed as Megan Moore servers for an ace, while Lexi Hanly has two big kills for the Colts to bring them to within two points of winning, 23-15. The Vikings would get a chance to serve and would serve long, while on the set point, miss hit it into the net for the 25-15 set.

But the Vikings win the game 2-1, and move into first place. Northern now has a 7-2 record, while the Colts have a 6-2 record. Northern next takes on St. Francois-Xavier (3-5), while St. Clair takes on LCCVI (6-3). Both games are on Thursday at 5:00p.m.
