The
finals for the Junior Provincial Curling
Championship are set, as both semi-final match
ups were played Saturday evening to decide who
would continue on into Sunday.
On the
Men's side, Michael Bryson's rink from the
Annandale Country Club. defeated Richard Krell's
rink from St. Thomas to advanced to the finals
with a 8-7 victory. Bryson's rink had the early
lead, after giving up two in the 2nd end, they
took two of their own with hammer in the 3rd
end, and stole one in the 4th and two in the 5th
for a 5-2 lead. But Krell's rink would comeback
in the next two ends, taking two with the
hammer, and stealing two more in the 7th end for
the 6-5 lead. Bryson would tie it up in the 8th
end with one, and in the 9th, would take a
critical steal of one. Krell's rink could only
get one in the 10th end, sending the match into
an 11th end. With the hammer, Bryson was able to
take one point for the victory.
Bryson's rink will now take on Matthew Camm's
rink from Ottawa in the finals Sunday at
11:00a.m. In their last meeting in draw 4,
Camm's rink won 9-5.
On the
ladies side, an extra step was needed before the
semi-finals could get underway.
In a
tie-breaker between 4-3 teams, Stephanie Van
Huyse's rink from Oakville took on Shannon
Harrington's rink from Ottawa, The team's would
blank the first three ends before Van Huyse got
the first point in the 5th end. In the 5th end
she would steal two to take a 3-0 lead.
Harrington's rink would get one back with the
hammer in the 6th end, only for Van Huyse get it
back in the 7th. In the 8th, Harington's rink
would take two back in the 8th end, and tie
things with a steal of one in hte 9th end. But
with the hammer in the final end, Van Huyse
would take one for the 5-4 victory to move on to
the semi-finals.
In
the semi-finals, Van Huyse's rink took on Jasmin
Thurston's rink from Kitchener-Waterloo.
Thurston started with hammer and took a point in
the 1st end. In the third end, Van Huyse would
take a big lead, scoring three points. But
Thurston would get it right back, getting three
of their own in the 4th end. Van Huyse would
take a one point lead when they got two in the
5th end. The teams would exchange points, in the
next two ends. Van Huyse would have the hammer
in the 9th, but would give
up four points to Thurston's rink, who now took
a 9-6 lead. But in the 10th end, Van Huyse would
tie it back up, taking three in the 10th end to
send the game into a deciding 11th end. But much
like the men's final, the team with the hammer
took the advantage, as Thurston's rink took one
for the 10-9 victory.
With
the win Thurston's rink moves on to face Clancy
Grandy's rink the Highland Country Club. In
their previous match from draw 2, Thurston's
rink gave Grandy's rink their only loss of the
round robin, winning 8-5. Their final match will
go Sundat at 3:00p.m.
The
winners will represent Ontario at the Canadian
finals next month.
