sarniasports.com January 8th, 2011

Day three of the Pepsi Provinical Curling Championships at the Sarnia Golf and Curling Club saw some separation between the top teams, as draw play comes closer to its finish and semi-final play begins.

On the women's side, Clancy Grandy's team has locked up a place in at least the semi-finals, as her rink won both their draw 5 and 6 matches. In draw 5 they defeated the Stephanie Van Huyse rink 7-3, stealing three in the 6th as part of four ends that they stole points for the victory. In draw 6, they defeated Shannon Harrington's rink 6-2, taking two points in the 2nd end, and scoring single points in the 7th, 8th and 9th ends. Grandy's rink is now on top of the women's division with a 5-1 record, and with one draw left to play will see action on Saturday or Sunday.

There are two teams tied in second with a 4-2 record. Shannon Harrington's rink and Jasmin Thurston's rink each are looking for a semi-final apperance. Both teams went 1-1 on day three, both winning their draw 5 matches, but both lost their draw 6 matches. These two teams play each other in the final draw, with one team guaranteed a spot in the semi-finals, while the other may have to play in a playoff.

The only other team in the semi-final picture is Stephanie Van Huyse rink who currently sits 3-3. Van Huyse rink started strong, but on day three lost both of their draws, the first to Grandy's rink, and the second to Ginger Coyle's rink in a close 8-6 match. Coyle's rink stole two points in each the 7th and 8th ends for the victory. Van Huyse's rink must win on Saturday morning in order to force a tie-breaker between the loser of Thurston and Harrington's match.

Unfortunately, Ginger Coyle, Stacey Hogan, Nicole McNiven and Jamie Sinclair's rinks have all be eliminated from competition as they sport a 2-4 record, and with one draw remaining, will not be able to catch the leaders.

On the men's side, the semi-final picture is fairly clear, and all that remains is a little positioning. Matthew Camm's rink remains the only undefeated team on both men's and ladies sides with a 6-0 record, as his rink defeated Robert Collin's rink 6-4 in draw 5, and Matt Dickson's rink 8-4 in draw 6.

The only rink who can catch Camm's is Richard Krell's rink who sits at 5-1. Krell's rink lost their first match of the day 8-1 to Kurtis Byrd's rink, allowing Byrd to take two points in the third end, steal one in the 4th, and two in both the 5th and 6th end before the game was called. But they would bounce back and defeat Matt Dickson's rink 8-4 in draw 6. Camm and Krell play in the final draw, and if Camm's rink wins, they get a bye into the finals.

Finally, to round out the men's semi-final hopefuls is Michael Bryson's team who sits 4-2. Bryson's rink won both their matches on day three, defeatng Jack Lindsay's rink 8-4, and Robert Collin's rink 10-4. Bryson is locked in to the semi-final match on Saturday.

For the rest of the men, there is not a team who can catch the leaders. Collin's, Lindsay and Derreck Veitch's rinks each sit with a 2-4 record, while Matt Dickson's rink is at 1-5.

The final draw is to be played on Saturday morning, with the semi-finals going later in the afternoon.
