The Junior Men's and Women's Ontario Curling
Championship opened Wednesday afternoon with the
first round draw.
On
sheet 1, both women's rinks played cautious at
first, taking out each rock thrown and waiting for a
miss hit. Jamie Sinclair's St. Thomas rink opened
the scoring with by taking one, but Clancy Grandy's
rink from Kitchener-Waterloo took two in the 5th end
to take the lead. The ladies from St. Thomas would
tie it up in the 6th end, taking another single
point, but Grandy's rink would again take another
two points to go ahead by two. Sinclair's team would
come back with two of their own in the 9th, but
without the hammer in the final end, the
Kitchener-Waterloo team were able to get one for the
5-4 victory.
On sheet
2, the Stephanie Van Huyse rink from Oakville
Curling Club stole 5 in the first end for an early
lead. Nicol McNiven would take one back in the next
end, raising her own stone to become shot rock, but
Huyse team would again go big, as they added three
more points on their next end.
McNiven's rink from
Carleton
Heights Curling Club would take another single in
the 4th end, but once again give up three points in
the next end. Huyse team would steal one in end 6
for a 12-2 lead. McNiven's team would get three more
back between the next two ends, but ultimately
called the rest of the match which ended 12-5.
In the
highest scoring match of the day, sheet three saw
Shannon Harrington's rink from the
Ottawa
Curling Club take three in the final end to go onto
a 12-10 win over Ginger Coyle's Highland Country
Club rink. Harrington's team stole two to open the
match, while taking another two with the hammer in
the third end. But Coyle's rink would take four to
take the lead 5-4. After Harrington took a single in
the 5th end, Coyle would respond with two more of
her own for a 7-5 lead. But The Ottawa club would
get three in the 7th to take a 8-7 lead, and steal
one in the 8th for a 9-7 lead. But Coyle would
retake the lead taking three of her own in the 9th
end for a 10-9 lead. Harrington's rink would take
the final three in the 10th end for the victory.
Finally
on sheet 4, Jasmin Thurston's
Kitchener-Waterloo Granite Club rink defeated Stacey
Hogan's Tam Heather Curling & Tennis Club rink 5-3.
Each tean would exchange points early on, and agin
in the 5th and 6th end. In the 8th end, Thurston's
rink would take three points for a 3 point lead.
Hogan's club could only get one back in the 9th end,
and without the hammer, called the match for the 5-3
loss.
In Junior
Men's action, Richard Krell's rink from the
St. Thomas
Curling Club ended their match after 7 ends by
taking a 8-2 victory over Robert Collins rink from
the Coldwater & District Curling Club. After
exchanging one point each
for the first four ends, Krell's team would steal
two points in the 5th end, three points in the 6th
end, and one point in the 7th end before Collins
rink called the match.
On sheet
6, another quick match saw the Matthew Camm rink
from the
Ottawa
Curling
Club win 7-2 over the Kurtis Byrd rink from the
Rideau Curling Club. Byrd`s rink had the early lead,
scoring one point and stealing naother. But Camm`s
rink would do the same in the following two ends,
and continue that momentum as they stole two points
in the 6th end and three points in the third end for
a 7-2 victory, as the Byrd rink called the match.
On sheet
7, a close match between Michael Bryson`s
Annandale
Country Club rink and Matt Dickson`s Palmerston
Curling Club rink came
down to the final end. Both teams blanked the first
three ends before they each took one with the gammer.
Bryson would steal one in the 6th, while Dickson
would take two
for the lead in the 7th. The Bryson club would
answer back with two of their own, as the teams
exchanged two points in the 9th and 10th ends, as
Bryson`s rink squeaks out a 6-5 victory.
In the
final match of the first draw, Jack Lindsay`s
St.
George's Golf & Country Club rink defeated
Derreck Veitch`s Stroud Curling Club rink 9-6.
Lindsay`s rink stole three in the second for an
opening lead, while Veitch would cut into the lead
by taking two of his own. In the 5th and 6th ends he
would take two in each to give his rink a 6-4 lead.
But Lindsay`s club would go on to take 5 points in
the final three ends including three stolen points
before Veitch`s rink called the match and took the
9-6 loss.
All rinks
will be in action again for draw two, as the
competition continues through Thursday, with finals
being held on Sunday. No Sarnia club is at this
tournament this year.
