Legionnaires let three goal lead in third slip to St. Thomas
dan mccaffery january 3rd, 2011

The Sarnia Legionnaires let what could have been an important triumph slip through their fingers Sunday night.

Leading 4-1 after two periods in St. Thomas, the Legion crew fell asleep in the final frame and lost 5-4 to the hometown Stars.

A victory would have lifted Sarnia into sole position of fifth place in the Western Ontario Hockey Conference, just one point out of fourth and only two out of third.

Instead, the team remains in sixth, one point behind the St. Marys Lincolns.

"In the first period we took it to them, in the second period there was too much standing around, and in the third period we got outworked,” assistant coach Mike Fleming said afterward.

Sarnia took command early, with rookie Tyler Annett scoring at 2:05 of the first frame.

"He broke down the wing and took a nice shot that fooled the goalie,” Fleming said.

Jesse Drydak and Tanner Tomlinson also found the back of the net to give the visitors a 3-0 lead after one period. In the second stanza, Drydak scored again to give the Legionnaires a 4-1 lead.

But St. Thomas scored four quick goals early in the third to take the win.

Goalie Kyle Washer, who made 36 saves, took the loss, dropping his record to 14-3-1.

An official shot total for Sarnia was not available last night, although Legionnaires general manager Bob Williamson recalled it being announced as “27 or 28.”

The seventh place Chatham Maroons, who defeated Lambton Shores 11-1 Sunday, have climbed within three points of the Legionnaires.

Game notes:

·         Sarnia assists went to captain Tyler Cicchini, Ilya Arkalov, Jordan McBeath, Bredan Kavaratzis, Andy Sokol, Nathan Mater and Shawn Waldie.

·         Despite the close score, all three stars were from St. Thomas.

·         The Legionnaires were 0-for-3 with the man advantage while St. Thomas was 1-for-5.

·         Drydak now has 23 goals on the season, while Tomlinson has 11. Annett's tally was his first of the season. The rookie spent much of the first part of the campaign playing on defence.

·         The Legionnaires are home Thursday to the Brantford Golden Eagles of the Midwest Conference of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.

·          Blake Thomas, who is the property of the OHL's Sarnia Sting, had two goals for St. Thomas. He has 27 points in 18 games since the Sting sent him down to Jr. 'B' earlier this season.
