The Point Edward Atom’s participated in the OakRidges Local League Tournament between Jan 14-16th in Richmond Hill and brought home the Championship cup

Game#1 vs OakRidges#3

The first game saw the Point hit the ice sluggish as they played Friday night to open their tournament. Action was end-to-end but neither team seemed to be getting any good scoring opportunities. As the period hit the mid-way mark, both teams were not able to get a rhythm but the pace of the game increased a bit. As the period came to a close, the Hawks had a great chance to start the scoring but the Kings goalie made a great save to end the period tied at 0-0.

The start of the second period of play resembled the first and the Hawks weren't able to clear their end very effectively. At the mid-way point the Hawks opened the scoring when Best received the puck at center ice and rushed into the Kings zone and was able to flip the puck over the left hand of the goalie make it 1-0. The Kings immediately retaliated with a goal of their own in a scammble in front of the Point goal to make it 1-1. This seemed to spark both teams as they opportunities began to open up. Just as the period ended, Hocking retrieved the puck at center and using the defense as a screen, shot a slap shot along the ice to catch the Kings net-minder off guard to make it 2-1 going into the final period.

The third saw the Point get into penalty trouble early but their skating improved as Gladwish caught the Kings defense pinching in and got a breakaway to extend the Hawks lead to 3-1. The third saw the Hawks take control of the game and they didn't let OakRidges get into a tempo. The Kings did close the gap when they shot and scored off a tipped puck to make it 3-2 but the Point team continued to press. King made an excellent up ice pass off the boards to a full striding Gladwish who had a break and made it 4-2 and before the buzzer rang Best hit the Kings mesh to end it 5-2.

Game#2 vs Oak Ridges#1

The second game of the tournament saw the Hawks play a mid-afternoon game versus OakRidges#1. The Point hit the board early when Kennedy passed to Laframboise who shot from the blue line and scored to take an early 1-0 lead. Action was tight for most of the period with both teams getting opportunities but MacDonald made some good saves to keep the Kings off the board. Late in the period, the Kings took advantage of a scramble in front of the net and tied it at 1-1 to end the first.

Action was fast paced and the Kings were getting a little frustrated as they got into a little penalty trouble. The Point couldn't capitalize on the first man advantage but as the penalty ended, Luciani passed to King who rushed the puck into the Kings end to make it 2-1. The Hawks couldn't take advantage of the second man advantage and the pace of the game slowed a bit. As the period came to a close, the Point couldn't clear the puck as the Kings pressured hard and they were able to tie it 2-2 going into the third.

The third saw both teams tasting the win as shifts were short and play was fast. Reinders made some great saves to keep the game tied and the crowd was going crazy. As the time on the score board was coming to a close and the crowd was getting ready for OT, the Point made a last rush of the period deep into the Kings end and Gladwish came across the rink and put it in the top corner to make it 3-2 with 14 seconds left to give the Hawks the win.

Game#3 vs Oak Ridges#2

The Point's third game was a 10:30am game that the team knew they had to win or tie to make it to the championship. As previous games, the Point came out early and Noah Best scored a 1:30 into the game. The Kings would retaliate with a goal of their own shortly thereafter to make it 1-1. The rest of the period was back and forth with neither team getting into a rhythm that would produce any good scoring chances.

The second period saw the game swing towards the Hawks as the Kings got themselves into penalty trouble early in the period. In the middle five minutes of the period the Oak Ridge team had three penalties and the Hawks took full advantage of the extra man as they scored two goals by Gladwish and King to take a 3-1 lead. Playing short for such a long time took its toll on the Kings as the Hawks were able to score two more goals within 30 seconds of each other by Best and Gladwish before the period ended to go into the third with a 5-1 lead.

The third period saw the Hawks control the play and keep the puck in the Kings end for a majority of the period. Davis added to the Hawks lead off a rebound the Kings defense couldn't clear. Game#4 –Overall Championship vs Oak Ridges#3

The Hawks had an afternoon to kill before the championship game. The Point was a bit nervous going into the game and a bit sluggish from a long wait to play as the Kings scored right from the opening face-off to take a 1-0 lead. That opened the Points eyes as they retaliated with two of their own goals by Gladwish and Best to take a 2-1 lead 50 seconds into the game. The Kings came out aggressive and scored two and a half minutes into the period to tie it a 2-2. Both teams seem to settle down and neither team was able to score for the remainder of the period as play was quick paced with both teams defense playing very well.

The second period saw the Point take an early lead when Best caught the Kings defense pinching in to get a breakaway and beat the Kings goalie. Similar to the second half of the first, the pace was very fast and both teams weren't able to get any second opportunities. As the period came to a close, the Kings were able to tie the game with only 13 seconds left.

The final 15 minutes of play was going to determine the championship between two excellent teams. The Hawks were able to take the lead mid-way through the period when Gladwish intercepted a Kings defensemen’s pass and shot a rocket to the top corner of the net. The lead was short lived as one minute later the Kings retaliated on a puck the Hawks couldn't clear to tie it 3-3 and force the game into OT.

The first overtime was 5 minutes of 5-on-5 and the Point came out fast and furious. Gladwish took advantage of a tired Kings team and scored 45 seconds into the OT to give the Hawks the Championship.
