sarniasports.com January 26th, 2011

The Sarnia Major Atom Sting participated in the Silver Stick Tournament in Sarnia this past weekend. The Sting put together a solid effort in this high level tournament, posting a 2 – 1 record and narrowly missed qualifying for the playoff round. The team would finish in 5th place overall out of the 15 teams in the Atom division.

In their 1st game of the tournament, Sarnia would face a team from Texas called the Grapevine Wolves. The Sting would win this game by a final score of 4 – 0, outshooting the Wolves by a margin of 24 – 5. Brett Allardyce (Lucas Ross, Curtis Marks) would score a goal on the first shift of the game to give the Sting an early lead. Dawson Young (Lucas Ross, Curtis Marks) would score another shortly after and Jake Vince (Tristan Haagsma) would also score to give the Sting a 3 – 0 lead after 1 period. Devin Devooght (Austin Coutts, Brett Allardyce) would score a late 2nd period goal for the 4 – 0 lead. Max Musico would record the shut out in the goal.

In game #2, Sarnia would find themselves engaged in a tight defensive battle with the Toronto Penguins. Toronto would score a power play goal in the first period to take a 1 – 0 lead. The Sting quickly went to the attack and generated some quality opportunities, but were unable to find the net. The Penguins would score a late 3rd period goal and win by a final score of 2 – 0.

In their final game of the tournament, the Sting would come away with a narrow 2 – 1 win over the Arapahoe Warriors (Colorado). This was a very entertaining game with the action moving well in both zones. Jake Vince (Dawson Young, Lucas Ross) and Brett Allardyce (Jack Smith, Justin Houle) would provide the scoring for Sarnia.

While the Sting did not advance to the playoff round, they put in a solid effort in representing the Sarnia community. They were able to limit some very strong opposition to a total of 3 goals over the 3 games played. The Sting would also like to congratulate Captain Brett Allardyce, as he was named to the tournament All-Star Team.
