Lakers hand Flyers overtime loss
sarniasports.com January 24th, 2011

The Alvinston Flyers are beginning to slip back of the Mooretown Flags in the race for second place in the North Division, as they drop a 4-3 decision in overtime to the division leading Wallaceburg Lakers.

Alvinston got on the board first with Chad Rainesberry scoring his 10th of the season to put the Flyers up 1-0. Wallaceburg would respond as Tyson Isaac scored his 34th of the season to make it all square at one each. Alvinston would jump on the lead again as Joe Archer made it 2-1 with his 21st of the season. But again the Lakers would come back as Norm Leger scored his 49th of the season on the powerplay to square the game after the first.

The second period saw no scoring despite the Lakers putting 19 shots on goal and holding Alvinston to just 4 shots.

In the third, the Lakers would take their first lead of the game early, as Jordan Durstin scored his 4th of the season on the powerplay 1:31 into the period to give the Lakers the 3-2 lead. Alvinston, who wasn't having great shooting chances tied it up at three when Adam Steadman scored his 8th of the season. Neither team could get the go ahead so overtime was needed.

In the dying seconds of the overtime period, Wayd Pitfield would put the Lakers over the top, as his 12th goal of the season is also the game winner.

Alvinston was held to just 16 shots compared to Wallaceburgs 49. Brandon Campbell made 45 saves in the loss, while Matt Berglund made 13 saves for the victory.

Alvinston is not five points behind Mooretown with three games remaining. With a Alvinston win or Blenheim loss, Alvinston will lock up a match up against Mooretown in the first round of the playoffs.

Alvinston and Wallaceburg will play a rematch on Wednesday, January 26th.
