Lakers clinch North Division, while others race for positioning
andrew brethauer january 5th, 2011

With the Mooretown Flags loss to Essex Tuesday night, the Wallaceburg Lakers have locked up first place in the Great Lakes Junior C North Division.

Wallaceburg sports a 24-5-1 record, and is 19 points ahead of current second place Alvinston (14-16-2) and 21 points ahead of Mooretown (13-15-2). Neither team has enough games to catch the Lakers who have won their second straight North Division title. Over half of the Lakers wins have come at home, as the team did not  lose a home game till late in December, winning 13 straight before dropping their last two home games to South Division leaders Belle River and Essex.

The rest of the North Division is racing for placement in the playoffs. The Mooretown Flags sit two points behind the Alvinston Flyers, but have played 30 games compared to Alvinstons 32.  But the Flags have been on a slump as of late, losing their last four games, while Alvinston has won two of their last five games. The last time the Flags and Flyers met was back on November 21st, with Mooretown winning 6-5. The two teams will meet twice before the season ends, including the final game of the season on February 4th in Alvinston, which could turn out to be a prelude to a playoff match up.

The other race is a playoff race, as Blenheim and Dresden each have 18 points in 30 games, and look to fill that final playoff spot. Blenheim (9-21-0) currently holds the advantage over Dresden (7-19-4), but have lost their last six in a row. Dresden has won two of their last four, including their latest victory, a 7-2 win over Blenheim. The two teams faceoff against each other two more times this season, as they push for the final playoff spot in the North Division.
