The
Sarnia
Sting Midget (A) team had a tough match in the
morning when they came away with a tie, and were
seeking their first win of the tournament. They
would take on the
Howard Huskies at the RBC Centre and came
away with a 2-0 shutout.
The
Huskies struck first in the game, but the goal was
waved off due to a kick in. Howard would continue
their pressure in the first, getting a breakaway
opportunity that was turned away by Sting goalie
Brandon Johnson. The Sting would finally add some
shots on net at the end of the period, but nothing
would get by Eric Hench, as both teams skated away
the first period with no goals scored.
In
the second, the Sting almost let a fluke get them
down, as the puck is not squeezed by Johnson, and
left at the front of a wide open net. But the Sting
got a break as the tip in went just wide. Both teams
in the second would have trouble finding the net, as
shots would sail wide into the boards. Both teams
had excellent chances to score, but the goal battle
between Johnson and Hench went into the third with
still a 0-0 draw.
In the
third it only took a minute-sixteen for the Sting to
get on the board, as Chris Ferrera
lets a wrist shot go that pops up into the air;
confusing Hench who can't find the puck till it is
in the back of his net for the 1-0 Sting lead. he
Huskies would try to respond as Matt Christopher
came in on a breakaway but his snapshot could not
get past Johnson who still held his shutout.
The Sting
would continue their hard play and be rewarded, as
dump in down low behind the net would be passed out
by Dan Hachey onto the stick of Christian Savo who
gets it passed Hench for a 2-0 Sting lead. The
Huskies would try late in the period to finally beat
Johnson, but he would get the better of them, and
complete the shutout.
With the
victory the Sting move to 1-1-1 on the tournament.
Unfortunatley they would not advance to the next
round.
