With
their first game in the Silver Stick tournament, the
Petrolia Oilers took on the
Ted Reeve Thunder and won the game with a
convincing 4-1 victory.
The
Thunder would start the game by ringing a shot of
the post. The Oilers would turn back down ice and be
stopped on a breakaway and slide the puck just wide
of the open net. Both teams put pressure on both
goalies who had to come up big. The Thunder would be
the first on the board. Jordan Robertson would slide
a wrap-around passed Spencer Krall to make it 1-0.
The goal at first was not noticed, but called in
once the puck was discovered to be in the back of
the net.
In
the second period, the Thunder would get into
penalty trouble, getting back to back penalties to
give the Oilers a 5 on 3 advantage. And they
wouldn't misuse the advantage as Cullen Hunter slaps
a shot passed Conner Allen to tie the game at 1-1.
But the Oilers were still on the powerplay, and it
wouldn't take long for Nolan Cooper to receive a
pass from behind the net and slap it low passed
Allen for two quick goals to give the Oilers the 2-1
lead.
The
Oilers themselves would take a penalty late in the
period, but as the penalty came to an end, they
rushed down the ice and Clint Rose would be left all
alone above the circle and would fire another low
slap shot to beat Allen for the third time that
period.
In
the third, the Oilers added to their lead quickly as
Micheal Gray put home a rebound into an open net to
put the Oiler sup 4-1. The Thunder would press to
get the game closer, but Krall stood tall and
smothered each puck that came into his crease. With
the game winding down, the Thunder would take two
tripping penalties on the same play that ate up much
of the time left in the game. The Oilers would not
let another shot through as they skate off with a
4-1 victory and first win of the tournament.
The
Oilers have two games on Saturday, first against the
Howard Huskies at 7:00a.m. at Clearwater
Arena, while their second game goes at 3:00p.m.
against the
Bradford Bulldogs at the Point Edward Arena.
