Seven local players lead the Sarnia Legionnaires in
scoring so far this Greater Ontario Junior Hockey
League season.
Perhaps that's not too surprising, however, because
the club is made up almost entirely of
Sarnia-Lambton lads.
Statistics show Jesse Drydak of Camlachie leads with
50 points, including 27 goals.
Shawn Waldie of Sarnia is next with a dozen goals
and 41 points.
In
third spot is Owen Rogers of Forest, with 12 goals
and 34 points to his credit. Rogers would
undoubtedly be challenging the other two for top
spot if not for the fact that he has missed eight
games due to injuries and suspensions.
Captain Tyler Cicchini of Sarnia is in fourth place
with 27 points, including 10 goals. Cicchini has
missed 12 games to injury this campaign.
In
fifth is Sarnia's Tanner Tomlinson, with 12 goals
and 13 assists among his 25 points.
Brent Sauve of Sarnia is sixth with 10 goals, 14
assists and 24 points. Sauve is in that lofty
position despite the fact that he often plays
defence.
Watford's Nathan Mater sits in seventh with 11
goals, 12 assists and 23 points.
The
first non-local athlete found on the scoring parade
is Ilya Arkalov, the Russian import who has 20
points, including 10 goals.
Rounding out the top 10 among active players are
Brett Thompson of Sarnia, with 19 points, including
eight goals, and Andy Sokol, also of Sarnia, with 18
points, including nine goals.
Braden Kavaratzis scored 19 points for the
Legionnaires this season, but the Midhurst native
has left the team to play Tier II Jr. 'A' hockey.
Other local players on the squad include goalie Sean
Parker of Forest, Tanner Ferguson of Watford, Jeff
Paulley of Corunna, and Sarnians Jeff Schroeter,
Tyler Annett, Thomas Moxley, Jordan McBeath and
Steve Farlow.
Other Sarnia-Lambton lads not currently on the
roster who have played for the team from time to
time this year include the Teschke brothers, Josh
and Jason, from Corunna and Derek D'Andrea, Mike
Burns and Matt Cimetta of Sarnia.
All
of this is not to say that out-of-town players have
not made a significant contribution. Players such as
Kyle Washer, Connor MacIvor and Josh Chapman are
vital members of the club.
But
as this article makes clear, the Legionnaires are
mostly a 'local' team.
