The
Sarnia Sting Atom A's were in tough against the
Toronto Penguins, and although they shutout their
first opponent, they were shutout 2-0 against the
Toronto squad.
The
first period was back and forth action, but a costly
Sarnia penalty resulted in a goal, as Adam Parker,
captain of the Penguins put in a powerplay goal to
make it 1-0 for Toronto. Sarnia would respond by
crashing the net hard, but the goal was waved off
and the faceoff brought to the left of the Penguin
goal, and the 1-0 lead would persevered into the
second period.
In
the second, the game turned a bit rough, as both
teams were handed checking penalties, giving the
other side scoring chances. But both goalies stood
strong and kept the game close. Neither team was
able to find the back of the net in the second
period, but the back and forth action continued, as
Toronto skated into the third still holding their
1-0 lead.
The
roughness of the game continued into the third, as
the pressure was on to get the tying goal, or the
put away goal. Each team had great opportunities,
but it was the Penguins who would find the back of
the net, as Parker found a wide open Patrick Hannon
in the slot who wristed it top corner past the Sting
goalie.
For
the rest of the period the Sting tried to get on the
board, but a costly penalty erased a scoring chance,
and cost Sarnia a chance to get back into the game.
In the final minute, emotions were getting the best
of some of the players, but in the end, the Penguins
were able to keep the puck in the Sarnia zone and
run out the clock for the 2-0 shutout victory. Sean
Quinn got the shutout for the Penguins.
Earlier in the day the Sting defeated the
Grapevine Wolves 4-0, and go to 1-1 in the
tournament. Their next game goes Saturday, January
22nd at 12:40p.m. against the Arapahoe Warriors
(0-2) at the Sarnia Arena.
