The
St. Patrick Fighting Irish made it two for two on
Championship weekend, as the junior boys team won
the LSSAA basketball title with a 48-39 victory over
the host St. Christopher Cyclones.
It was the
Cyclones who took the early advantage, using the low
boarders to get the ball to the net. Sam Ellenor
scored the Cyclones first four points down low in
the paint, while the Irish got free throw from
Cormac Brown. Ellenor would again provide more pound
below the net as the big forward pushed in for
another score, and added another late drive to the
basket for eight points in the quarter.
The
Cyclones took the early first quarter lead 12-7.
In the
second, the Irish started off with two points from
Brown and two free throws from Blair Reid to make it
a one point game. Brown would add two more as they
take their first lead of the game. But after a
rebound by Eric Steeves and two free throws to add
to it, the Cyclones were back in front. Steeves
ended the quarter with six points, while Ellenor
added a rebound put back to give the Cyclones a
22-18 lead at half time.

Orestes
Malespin opened the third quarter with a long three
pointer for the Irish, while Brown retakes the lead
with his lay up for two. Malespin would have a huge
quarter for the Irish, hitting a three pointer, two
free throws and a jumper for two all in a row to
give the Irish a 30-24 lead. Ellenor would get
another bucket for the Cyclones, but Mike Bianchi
put in a jumper to give the Irish their first lead
after a quarter 32-26.
In the
fourth, Joel Mahon got an early ball in the paint to
fall, while Bianchi puts in a rebound for the ten
point lead. Ellenor would added three points off
free throws to help cut the lead, but Mahon added a
lay in plus a foul shot to fall to erase those three
points.
With the
quarter coming to a close, the Cyclones pressed for
points. Carey Brown hit a three pointer for the
Cyclones, while Josh Elsley got a lay in and foul to
go in for three points of his own, bringing it to
41-35. The teams would exchange free throws as the
Cyclones were in foul trouble.

Unfortunatley those fouls would end costing the
Cyclones, as they could never play defence and had
to foul to stop the clock. The Irish made four free
throw points and Malespin added two more, as the
Irish pull out the victory and win 48-39.
Cormac
Brown had 14 points for the Irish, while Orestes
Malespin had 13. Sam Ellenor had 15 points in this
loss for the Vikings.
