The St. Patrick Fighting Irish defeated the Northern
Vikings 38-31 in the LSSAA midget boys basketball
finals Saturday afternoon at St. Christopher's high
school.
The Irish
controlled the tempo of the first quarter, passing
the ball around the outskirts of the three point
line, chewing up seconds off the clock. Paul Withson
would get the first jumper of the game to fall for
the Irish to give them the lead, and Mat Withers
would put up two for the Vikings. Both teams would
put up shots in the early quarter but couldn't get
the ball to drop in for points.
Withson
would hit two long jumpers for four points nearing
the end of the quarter, while Jay McCauley added two
and Johnny Ramos added two in the paint for the
Irish. The Vikings were held to just four points in
the opening quarter with Jeremy Jones providing the
other two as the Irish took a 10-4 lead into the
second.
Spencer
Gorman would get the Vikings to within three early,
as he gets a lay up and foul shot to fall to make it
10-7. Withson would put in two and McCauley would
dial in for a three pointer, putting the Irish up
15-9. The Vikings wouldn't go away and with points
from Mitch Smiley and Jones, Northern was down by
four.

But
Withson would take control, knocking down a three
pointer and another longer jumper for two to put the
Irish back up by seven. Jones would add two for the
Vikings, and Gorman added two for Northern to bring
them to within four, as the Irish take a 20-16 lead
into half time.
After
half, McCauley would open with a two pointer in the
paint before the Vikings went on a 8-0 run, with
Jones getting four of the points to comeback and
take their first lead of the game 23-22. But that
lead wouldn't last long as Withson knocked down
another jumper, and Nick McLean added two in the
paint to put the Irish back up by three, as the
Irish escape the third quarter still in the lead,
28-23.
In the
final quarter McLean went to the net for two to
start the final period and Withson again nails a
long jumpuer to put the Irish up early by seven.
Manrai Sidhu hit a jumper for the Vikings, and
Withson another jumper for the Irish, as the Vikings
defence had trouble containing the shooter.

With the
Vikings in foul trouble, they could only watch as
the Irish went to the free throw line and Tyler
Johnson - Barnes hit two free throws, The Vikings
had to keep fouling to stop the Irish from scoring,
and with seconds ticking away James Pavey hit two
more free throws for the Irish to seal the victory
and the championship, as St. Patrick's wins the
midget basketball finals 38-31.
St.
Patrick's was the first seed, followed by Northern
in the division. Withson ended up with 17 points in
the game.
