St. Patrick's wins senior girls LSSAA volleyball championship

The St. Patrick Fighting Irish pulled off another big upset to capture the senior girls LSSAA volleyball championship Friday night at Lambton College.

 

The Colts started the first set off on top, taking a 4-1 early lead with kills from Brittany Lewis and Lexie Hanly and an ace from Paige Price. But the Irish would stick around and come back as the Colts hit into the net twice and Jacey Nienhuis comes back with a kill of her own to tie the game at 4-4. Riley Williams would re-establish the Colt lead with a kill and ace, while Hanley would provide a deep push to put the Colts back up by 3. But again the Irish would stick around with Colt errors and a big block from Victoria Edwards.

 

Price would start the Colt lead again and Williams would get a block to again put the Colts up by 3. The Irish would again fight back with Ciji Service providing a block to tie the game at 13-13, then pushing the ball into the open court to give the Irish their first lead of the game. The Colts then begin to make errors, hitting the ball into the net and four hitting. This time the Colts would come back and tie 17-17 with Price hitting another ace. Williams would hit a kill and an ace before she hit long tying the game again at 19-19. The Irish would begin to pull away as the Colts can't keep the ball in the court. Hanly would hit the ball into the net and the Irish would take the first set 25-22.

 

In the second the Irish would take the early lead 4-2 with Jessica Cookie getting a kill. Lewis for the Colts would provide a kill and Jordan Tamming a block to give the Colts a 7-4 lead. Both teams would exchange errors, but the Irish would hit two into the net to give the Colts a 12-11 lead. Williams would get an ace on her serve but Hillary Graham would come back with a big kill. Williams would tie it with her own kill, but Edwards for the Irish would jump up for the big block on the Colts.

 

With the Irish down by one, Jess Osborn stepped up to serve for six straight points as the Irish take a 20-15 lead, while Edwards provided another big block. The Colts on the final two points would hit into the net and would error on their hit to give St. Patrick's the second set 25-16.

In the third set the Colts jumped out again to a 3-0 lead. Lewis had two kills for the Colts while Hanly had another block for the Colts. Tammining would serve for two aces as the Colts took a 6-4 lead. But after the Colts hit long, Kirstin Clatworthy hit a kill down the line and went up for a big block to take a 9-7 lead.

 

The Colts would tie it but Edwards for the Irish would provide to kills at the net to give the Irish a 13-10 lead. Hanly would bring the Colts back into the lead as she had an ace, two kills and a block to give the Colts a 18-16 lead.

 

But the Irish would retire the score at 19-19, but Hanly would again dominate at the net with two tip overs for two, followed by Tamming hitting an ace. Hanly would finish her well played third set with a kill at the net to give the Colts the third set 25-21.

 

In the fourth set, the Irish looked to finish the game off. After the match opened with two long serves Jacey Nienhuis stepped up to serve and lead the Irish with eight straight service points, including kills from Correy Lester and Clatworthy. With a 10-2 lead, the Irish continued to pound away at the Colts, as Cooke had a kill and Graham with a tip over to take 13-5 lead. Hanly would have a block and push over to help get the Colts to within ten, but the Irish got two big aces from Morgan Tucker, and after two kills by Nienhis, the Irish lead 22-7.

 

After a block at the net set up match point, the Irish would watch as Hanly hit the ball into the net, and St. Patrick's captured the senior girls champions with a final set win of 25-8.

 

The Irish won 3-1 in sets.

 

St. Patrick's was the third ranked team coming into the game, while St. Clair was the first ranked. Hillary Graham was named player of the game for the Irish as she had five kills, two blocks, nine service aces and seven assists. Paige Price was named the player of the game for the Colts with five kills, five blocks, three aces and five assists.
