Legionnaires lose in London 3-1
dan mccaffery February 16th, 2011

The Sarnia Legionnaires blew a game in London Wednesday that they could easily have won.

Coach Dan Rose's Western Ontario Hockey Conference club outshot the London Nationals 35-20 right in the Forest City, but it wasn't enough to save them from a 3-1 defeat.

"It was a good road game," Rose said later. "We made only one mistake all night."

Owen Rogers got the only Sarnia goal, collecting his 13th of the season when he batted a puck out of the air and into the net. His marker, which came late in the first frame, tied the game at one goal apiece.

Captain Tyler Cicchini and rightwinger Jesse Drydak assisted on the play.

Rogers now has 40 points in 37 games this campaign.

The Legionnaires had plenty of scoring chances but they failed to connect on nine powerplay opportunities, including a couple of tries with a two-man advantage.

On the positive side, they held the Nationals to just one powerplay on seven tries, including two 5-on-3 advantages.

Brent Sullivan was particularly effective in a penalty killing role for Sarnia.

Legionnaires goal Kyle Washer suffered his 10th loss of the year to go with 18 victories.

The loss dropped Sarnia's record to 23-23-3.

The Legionnaires return to action tonight when they face the LaSalle Vipers in the last home game of the regular schedule. This will be fan appreciation night, with plenty of prizes being given away.

The Legionnaires remain tied with the Chatham Maroons for seventh place in the conference. Both teams have two games left.

Sarnia is in Strathroy Saturday to close out the regular season.
