Senior boys LSSAA basketball finals set after semi-final match ups

The LSSAA senior boys basketball finals are set, as the Northern Vikings and the St. Christopher's Cyclones will play Saturday night to determine the champions of this years league.

In the early game, St. Christopher's defeated St. Patrick's 78-45.

 

Joe Rocca started the game off with a three pointer for the Cyclones while adding another 8 points in the quarter for an 11 point quarter. The Cyclones jumped out to an early lead, as Alex DeCarolis added a three point as well, and Marty Popiel added two to give the Cyclones a 12 point lead midway.

 

Harry Oh kept the Irish in the game scoring six in the opening period, while Alex Mariuz added free throws for the Irish. But the Cyclones would get out of the first quarter up 10, leading 20-10.

In the second quarter Logan Savage opened the scoring with a rebound put back for two for the Cyclones, while Eric McDonald made a lay in and extra on the foul. The Cyclones begin to open up their lead to 29-11. Pat Taylor made a long three pointer for the Irish, but a technical foul gave McDonald free shots which he made. But the Irish would begin a small streak of points, scoring six in a row, with Mike Yarc leading with four on free throws.

 

But Joe Rocca would continue his big game in the second and get five quick points, as he drived the net and reversed laid in along with a foul for three in one play. St. Patrick's would sick three free throws in the dying seconds of the half, as the Cyclones took a 41-26 lead into the locker room.

 

Coming out in the third, Rocca continued his game, hitting six free throws in a row to add to his increasing point totals. Harry Oh would also get four early points, but the Cyclones would start to pull away. McDonald would pull up for a three points and Popiel would lay in for two and make two free throws, as the Cyclones increase their lead after the third to 65-35.

 

In the final quarter, St. Patrick's got a little more scoring. Josh Lockwood would hit six points in the quarter, while Harry Oh added six points including one three pointer and three free throws. Mike Rocca would take control the Cyclones in the 4th, scoring six in the final quarter while also assisting on many of the Cyclone points.

 

The Cyclones would go on to win 78-45 and then waited for their opponent who was going to tip off soon after just down Michigan Ave.

 

In the second semi-finals, the Northern Vikings defeated the St. Clair Colts 93-40.

 

In the first quarter Jon Moffat would open the scoring for the Colts with a lay in for two. Unfortunatey for St. Clair that would be the only lead they would hold all game as J. Ravenhorst pulled up for three and knocked it down to give the Vikings a 3-2 lead. The Vikings would continue the three ball as R. Souala would hit a three pointer, while R. Hardick laided in two plus an extra point on his free throw. J. Zonneville would hit a three point as well and get two foul shots right after as the Vikings jump out to an early 16-7 lead.

 

In the second quarter Zonneville knocked down another three as did Ravenhorst. The Colts and Vikings would exchange two points back and forth as H. Auterhoff had four in the quarter for the Vikings, while Denver Spearman had seven for the Colts. Ravenhorst continue his big game as he hit two more three pointers in the quarter to give him 11 points in the period.

 

At the half the Vikings took a 44-24 lead, making 9 three point shots as a team.

 

 In the third quarter the three pointers continue as the Vikings Ravenhorst and T. Dawding hit three in a row, while R. Souala made two as the Vikings increase their lead to 60-24. St. Clair would get offence from Spearman with four in the quarter including a late three pointer, but by late in the period, the score was getting high as the Vikings took a 72-32 lead into the final period.

 

In the final period H. Auterhoff had seven for the Vikings while T. Burns had four. Northern would go on to the victory 93-40.

 

The finals are set for Saturday night at 8:00pm. St. Christopher's will be looking to defend their championship as they were last season winners.
