sarniasports.com February 14th, 2011

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League announced that goaltender Mark Visentin of the Niagara IceDogs is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending February 13. The first goaltender to win the award this season, Visentin posted a 3-0-0-0 record including one shutout victory with a goals-against-average of 0.67 and save percentage of .973.

Visentin continued the strong play that earned him Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week honours one week ago beginning Wednesday with a 24-save performance as first star of a 3-1 win over the Kingston Frontenacs. He then earned his fourth shutout of the season on Friday night when he made 26 saves to blank the Barrie Colts as third star of the game. Visentin narrowly missed out on a bid for his fifth shutout of the season on Sunday afternoon in Brampton. He made 21 saves as first star of the contest allowing just one Battalion goal with 28 seconds to play in the 3-1 win.

Visentin, an 18-year-old from Waterdown, ON, currently holds the league’s best goals-against-average and save percentage at 2.18 and .927 respectively. The 2010 first round draft pick of the Phoenix Coyotes has a 23-4-2-4 record and is currently on a six-game winning streak and remains unbeaten in his last 19 games since November 19.

Former OHL Player of the Week winners Jason Akeson of the Kitchener Rangers and Christian Thomas of the Oshawa Generals were also considered for their offensive efforts. Akeson led the league with 10 points in four games scoring three goals and seven assists, while Thomas led the league with five goals and added an assist for six points in three games.
