sarniasports.com February 14th, 2011

The Lambton Minor Atom AAA Sting have a tough task next weekend after falling behind 2-0 in their quarterfinal playdown series with the Sun County Panthers. The Sting dropped a pair of games over the weekend and are now faced with a must win game Friday in Essex as they cannot afford another loss in the best-of-five series.

The Sting came out flat in Essex on Saturday and fall behind 4-0 in the first period. Lambton would eventually generate some offense but would fall by a 7-3 score. Nolan DeGurse scored a pair of powerplay goals and Spencer Vandenboom added a goal with 5 seconds remaining in the game. Ryan Barwitzki, Jaycob White, Cole MacKinnon and Brock Barber earned assists.

The Sting had a much better start at home on Sunday but would lose a heartbreaker 6-5 as Sun County scored the game winner with 53 seconds remaining in regulation time. Nolan DeGurse got the opening goal with help from Brock Barber and Spencer Vandenboom. The Sting would increase their lead to 2-0 with a powerplay marker early in the second from Barber assisted by DeGurse and Brandon Neelin. Sun County would respond with 3 goals of their own to take the lead but just 13 seconds after the third Panther tally Barber got his second of the game with MacKinnon drawing the assist. Sun County would score once more late in the period to take a 4-3 lead heading into the final stanza.

The Sting did not quit and Hunter Monkhouse would tie the game at 4 when he scored off of a setup from Vandenboom midway through the period. However, Sun County would take the lead once more as a screen shot eluded Sting goaltender Liam McCarthy. With just over 5 minutes remaining Barber would get his third of the game to once again tie the contest. DeGurse and Josh McLean would pick up the assists. However, Sun County would get the game winner in the final minute. The Sting pulled their goalie to try and get the equalizer but came up just short.
