The Sarnia
Legionnaires pounded the Lambton Shores Predators
10-2 Thursday to post their fourth win in their last
five games.
The triumph kept coach Dan Rose's team in contention
with the Chatham Maroons for seventh place in the
Western Ontario Hockey Conference. The Maroons, who
also won last night, are a single point ahead of
Sarnia.
The Legionnaires, who evened their record at
22-22-3, have a game in hand on Chatham.
First period
The game was never in doubt, with Sarnia jumping
into a 5-0 lead after the first 20 minutes.
Defenceman Steve Farlow got things rolling with a
shot from the point at 2:15. Tyler Annett picked up
his first of four assists on the play.
Jesse Drydak got his first of two goals when,
playing shorthanded, he skated into the slot and
fired home his 31st of the season. Brent Sullivan
and Owen Rogers had helpers.
Shawn Waldie got what turned out to be the winner at
15:01 when he popped in a rebound from an Annett
shot.
Andy Sokol made it a four-goal bulge when he
accepted a perfect pass from Ilya Arkalov and fired
home his 10th of the year. Brent Sauve also
assisted.
Rookie David Gibbs rounded out the scoring when a
drive from the point bounced high into the air, then
came down, almost at his feet. He calmly tapped in
his first of the season.
Second frame
The onslaught continued in the second period with
Drydak deflecting in a wobbly point shot from Josh
Chapman for his second of the game and 32nd of the
year. The prolific rightwinger now has as many goals
as he scored all of last year. Rogers also assisted.
Jeff Schroeter stickhandled into a good position
before finding the back of the net for the eighth
time this season to make it 7-0. Gibbs and Annett
assisted.
After Adam Arseneault ruined Sarnia goalie Sean
Parker's shutout bid, Gibbs poked in a loose puck at
the side of the net to make it 8-1. Schroeter and
Annett assisted.
James Pursell scored the Preds second of the contest
before the period ended.
Third stanza
Brett Thompson got his 10th of the season early in
the third, coming out from behind the net to fire
the puck home.
Captain Tyler Cicchini rounded out the scoring with
his 15th of the season. Drydak and Rogers set the
play up.
Game notes:
· Shawn Parker made 31 saves in the Sarnia net to
pick up his second win against one loss since
joining the Legionnaires. Included among his stops
were two breakaway saves.
· Paid attendance was 1,078, the lowest gathering of
the season. The fact that the Sting were also at
home and that the Predators were not seen as a scary
opponent may have led to the smaller crowd. Frigid
weather might also have kept some people home.
· Predators goalie Mark Foley was outstanding,
allowing only three goals during the half game he
played. He robbed several Legionnaires from close
range and even got a shot on Parker himself.
· Lambton Shores has now gone winless in 26 games.
