Lancers late third period goals leads to victory over Vikings
andrew brethauer February 10th, 2011

In the final game of the season before the playoffs, the top two teams in girls LSSAA hockey took to the ice to battle for first place. The high powered offence of the Northern Vikings tried to beat the shut down defence of the LCCVI Lancers, but in the end, the stellar goaltending won the show, as the Lancers defeated Northern 2-1.

In the first period Northern had the early chances, capitalizing on turnovers by the Lancers in front of their own net. Fortunatley for the Lancers goalie Amelia Maniuk was there to make the stops each time, keeping the highest scoring offence off the board.

Back the other way Karly Dobbin had an excellent chance in close off a faceoff, but Vikings goalie Erica Sullivan was there to get the pad down. The game turned into a goalie duel between Maniuk and Sullivan as each team put shots on net but each goalie was there to make the stops. LCCVI would get some late chances in the first but the Northern defence back checked to help clear the puck away as the first period ended scoreless.

In the second period the goalie battle carried over as again both sides got equal chances at putting the puck on net, but Sullivan and Maniuk were there to close to the door on any goal scoring. Sydney Smith and Steph Charteris both had back hand chances in close for the Vikings but Maniuk was there for the saves. Back the other way Makayla Eves had a chance of a pass from behind the net but she couldn't jam it home, and the second period ended with the game still scoreless.

In the third Northern again had its chances as Marlow Pecora was in close but Maniuk made a big kick save. But eventually the onslaught of shots would finally be to much. Alicia MacDougall would get the puck along the boards at the has marks and be untouched skating to the front of the net, where she would let a wrist shot go that beat Maniuk high to break the scoreless game.

With the Vikings now leading and under five minutes to go, it didn't take long for the Lancers to get back into the game. LCCVI would capitalize of a Vikings turnover in Northern's end as Danielle Campbell intercepted a pass inside the Vikings zone, came in on a breakaway and deked Sullivan, sliding the puck into the open net to tie the game at 1-1.

A minute and a half later, the Lancers would get the go ahead. Darian Adams would let a shot through that Sullivan stopped. Campbell would try and put the puck away but her shot went off the back glass. Fortunately Dariah Limb picked the puck out of the air beside the net, putting it down on her stick and jammed it into the open net to give the Lancers the 2-1 lead.

With seconds to go the Vikings would pull their goalie, but LCCVI would hold on to the lead and take the victory to claim first place heading into the playoff round.
