The Sarnia
Major Atom A/AA Sting took home top honours at the
West London Byron Optimist Tournament this past
weekend. This is the 2nd tournament championship for
the Sting this season. Sarnia would play just well
enough to advance in the preliminary round and would
win the semi final and final games by identical 1 –
0 margins.
In their first game of the tournament, the Sting
would come out strong against the Toronto Avalanche
with a 6 – 0 shutout victory. The Sting would
dominate this game from the drop of the puck,
scoring on the first shift of the game and
outshooting their opponents 31 – 5. Justin Houle and
Jake Vince would score 2 goals in this game, Brett
Allardyce would pick up 1 goal and 1 assist, Austin
Coutts would score 1 goal, Devin Devooght and
Matthew Torti would pick up 2 assists and Curtis
Marks, Jack Smith, Tristan Haagsma, Dakota Moore and
Spencer Preece would all add 1 assist.
The Sting would come out a little flat in their 2nd
game and lose to West London by a final score of 3 –
1. Austin Coutts would get the Sarnia goal with
assists to Devin Devooght and Jake Vince.
The Sting would need at least a tie to advance and
managed to skate to a 3 – 3 tie with Brantford in
their final round robin game. The Sting would have a
comfortable 3 – 1 lead late in the 3rd period before
Brantford would strike for 2 late goals and give the
Sting fans some anxious moments before the final
buzzer. Jake Vince, Lucas Ross and Curtis Marks
would score the goals in this game with Dawson
Young, Mac Caley, Brett Allardyce, Matthew Torti and
Dakota Moore all picking up 1 assist.
The Sting would save their best hockey for the
playoff round winning the semi-final against the
London Bandits by a score of 1 – 0. The Bandits
started strong in this game but an entire team
commitment to the defensive zone limited any quality
scoring chances by London. In the 2nd period, Sarnia
would begin to gain control of the game generating
several quality opportunities but would be unable to
find the net. The Sting would carry their momentum
to the 3rd period and Curtis Marks would score an
early goal with the assist going to Lucas Ross. This
would be the only goal of the game with Max Musico
picking up the shutout in goal.
In the final, the Sting would be involved in another
nail biting contest with the Cambridge Hawks. This
game would have to wait until overtime before it
would eventually be settled. The Sting would
outshoot Cambridge by a margin of 27 – 15 in this
game. It would be Lucas Ross providing the heroics
with only 1:30 left on the clock, slamming in a
loose puck in front of the net with Brett Allardyce
picking up the assist on the play. James Dunn would
pick up the shutout in goal.
